Make a motor mount self?

Hi Guys!

I'm thinking about converting a HPI Baja 5B/5T to brushless, but I would like to make that motor mount self, so I don't want to buy it somewhere. But, I think it would be better if I first start "small", like converting a Losi 8ight or something, and if I screw it up I can always buy a motor mount here on rc-monster. If I would buy a Baja, and I screwed it up I couldn't buy a motor mount somewhere, so I had a Baja with a gas motor, and I don't want that. Do you guys understand? ( My English sucks.. )

But, which tools do I need to make a motor mount? The motor mount does not have to look good, it has to be good. I know, Mikes motor mounts look awesome, but what tools do I need to make something like this:


It doesn't look good, but the guy who build this says that this motor mount is good enough for the Plettenberg motor. ( It's in a 1/5 scale car btw )



And the next question, what would be a cool car to convert to brushless? ( 1/8 scale or larger and NO Truggy ) And there has to be a motor mount for that car, so if my motor mount sucks I can buy a motor mount for the car.

Tools:

Vertical mill
Drill press/ pillar drill
Hacksaw
Tap and Die sets
Drill bits and end-mills (like a drill bit, but with a flat tip)

For a smaller mount, you could do it quite easily with a vice and a hacksaw, and some files, but for something so large, a properly equiped mill would be needed, especially with thick pieces of aluminium.

As for which vehicle to convert... take your pick. Try looking in the buggy section, or for something more simple, consider a Revo.

That is one heavy duty motor mount .

I'd say convert one of these. Most BA 1/5 out there, IMO:

And how do I get some holes in there then? So for a 1/8 motor mount I would need these things?
- Vice

- Drillpress? ( Or what would be good 2, something cheaper maybe? )

If I were to make that, I'd use:

-scroll saw with extra blades
-drill press with drill bits of the size I need
-several files, including a larger one for shaping flat surfaces
-sand paper for a nicer finish

Baja 5b = manly
mcd = mas puto

It may perform well, but it sure looks like it fell off the short bus.

What he said plus take your time and make a drawing. Mock up the drawing to the 5B to insure accuracy and always measure at least three times to insure accuracy.

I like making my mock-ups out of cardboard first. Much easier to trim than 1/4" thick aluminum! If you need enough strength to actually test-mount the motor, a piece of lexan would work too.
