ESC/Motor for crawler - 01.14.2009, 09:18 AM

My son wants to have a crawler for his 9th birthday so I'm thinking of buying the Axial AX 10 ARTR kit. My problem is choosing which ESC/motor to buy for it.

I had narrowed down my choices between these but any input or recommendation is very much appreciated.

Castle Creations Sidewinder 1/10th Scale Sport Brushless ESC (any recommendation for a motor)?

Edit - any feedback on this kit?

For a good low cost setup, get a sidewinder esc and a integy 55t motor. Should cost about 90 bucks new, or cheaper if you find a good deal on the esc. The motors are 20 bucks, and last while...

Both escs are great, I like the FX-R because of it size I have one in my scaler. I am a Castle guy by heart and the sidewinder is a great esc as well. The crawler kit you asked about is a Berg and it has great axles the rest of the kit is ok, but any kit is like that. I run Berg axles on my 2.2 comp rig and I can say that the axles are tuff as hell. I have not broke anything yet and I have been running my axles hard for about 8 months. As for a motors Holmes Hobbies has the best hand wound brushed motors on the market. IMO

That is the best setup, I don't care for the way you have to solder the cap, motor, and battery wires to the FX-R, but I do like the FX-R because of it size.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll be ordering sidewinder and integy motor today. I'll be running it on 2S so I will also be installing a Dimension Engineering Sport BEC on it.

Might want to go to a 45 or 35 turn motor for 2s usage, 55t might be a bit slow...

Hey Lito happy birthday to your kid. You are really sounding like a Pro in the BL dark side young man. That sounds like it is going to be quite a setup for an 8 year old. You have started him out really young. By the time he is 13 he is going to want a Baja 5b or 5t. When we were kids we got second hand rollerskates for birthday gifts for like $10. Birthday gifts sure have changed a lot in 40 years. Nice...

But you have to remember that gift giving was very different when you were young Jerry... Most gifts had to be small so that you could carry them while running away from carnivorous dinosaurs....

Why??? - 01.14.2009, 06:17 PM

Why do you think we got rollerskates??? I lived in the Philli projects from 1age 10 to 17, and life was tough. I was lucky to have a good pair of sneakers, a bike, and a basketball to my name. Back then I was the neighborhood bike repair kid. Everyone brought there cycles to me when they had a flat or broken chain, or whatever. That was how I started my mechanical career, and made money for snacks. No ancient creatures though. I am not that freaken old you monkey baller.

Thanks Jerry. I told him how fortunate he is for having almost everything he wanted. As long as he's doing his house chores and keeps on getting good grades in school, I don't mind spending my money for his toys. Hey at least I can play with it too. In fact, my wife asked me if he really wanted a new truck or was it for me .

James, what would be the top speed with the 55T on 2S?

Well, my buds run 55t motors on 3s lipo, and with 2.2 tires and axial trannys geared 14/87 they get about 5mph out of them. I prefer a bit of wheel speed as I think it can be an asset when crawling. A 55t motor has a kv of about 1100, so the speed calc may be useful. On 2s figure 3.5mph with stock gearing on an ax10.

You can try outrunner around 1000kv, something similar to Crawlmaster by HH.

If that's the case, I'll just run it on 3S. I have a couple of Neuenergy 5000mah 3S batteries for the truck. Thanks.

The 55t motors definately perform well on 3s. With a 5000 pack you will get about 1.5 hrs of runtime, possibly more!

I use 2100mah lipos in my 2.2 comp rig and it does at least 35-45mins. And that is with a big outrunner. With the low gearing and speeds crawlers are setup for they barely draw anything.

1.5 hours!!!!! That's nice. He can crawl his truck to boredom while I'm busy running around the track . I'm going to keep this truck as stock as it can be until he starts breaking axles or lockers. I saw some broken aluminum lockers over at RC4WD.
