Thunder Tiger ST-1 -
07.02.2008, 05:44 AM
Hi all,
I was curious if anybody has converted one of these before? I did a search in the forums and saw that one person did but it was a while ago, and was wondering if anybody has tried again recently? I tried looking @ the shop here but didnt see a motor mount either and not to be rude, but if anybody knows of another place... I tried to ask mike, but i know hes a busy man and so i dont wanan email and ask him to much bout it. I just got done with a crt .5 and was able to buy the TT used for a decent price. Was going to keep it a nitro, but after running it as such, realized that i just like the electric, mainly the brushless so much more. TIA for help.

I have a brushless Thunder Tiger ST-1 Pro. I've been racing it since mid October last year, plus a decent amount of running up and down the street and on grass.
I can't remember all the things that are different between the RTR and the Pro, but besides the stock body and a set of center diff gears I shimmed wrong I haven't had to replace anything on it yet, so it seems pretty strong to me.
I use a neu 1515 2.5d and 95% of the racing has been done on 5s, with maybe half of the bashing on 6s, so the drivetrain seems pretty decent.

Hand made motor mount and battery trays. Esc mount is the rcm one made for the quark 125.

Ignore the messy wiring and foam hanging off the side.

It's not the latest and greatest racing truggy, but I think it's a pretty competitive car once you do the steering mod (my car has so much steering that I don't use the brakes during races, I just turn the wheels and it will slow down) and find a set up you like. Plus it's cheaper than most of the other cars, and parts are pretty cheap (I buy mine from a main hobbies, but not that I've gotten to use many of them yet ). Overall it seems a bit underrated to me.
~4 months ago Mike told me in an e-mail that he would have a mount ready for the ST-1 in about 2 weeks....so I guess he just got side tracked with all the other stuff he's doing. I'm sure he will end up releasing one if he gets asked about it a bit more, so he knows there are people around who want one.
GO the ST-1!

Hi Patrick,
Very very nice truck. I like the ST-1 with steering mod. This truck is way underrated.

what steering mod did you do? and also was it hard to make the motor mount for it? I tried making a battery mount for my crt .5 and it was a mess. also what kinda tools did u end up using to create the mount?

Hi dark96,
Yes I have done the mod & it definitely works. Prior to the mod, the front tire does not touch the body at maximum steering end point. After the mod, I was surprised that it was touching the body. At first I didn't even realise what happened. Had to trim the body a little to clear the tire.

Yeah mine sounded a bit like the diff was clicking when I took corners at speed, but it was just the body trying to rip the tread off the tires, until I trimmed it.
It wasn't really that hard to make the motor mount, just time consuming, but it depends on how much of that sort of stuff you've done before. If you haven't done much it's not the easiest thing to start with.
I used at hacksaw, a few different files, various drill bits, cheap drill press (I did a few of the holes with a normal drill, but it's a bit harder), dremel, 4mm tap, fine sand paper and finally a buffing wheel on a bench grinder to make it look pretty.

yea, the hardest part for me is making the slits like you have for the motor to move either up or down and to make it look uniform. but like i said i have only done one other piece, which actually was just a flat piece of alum. for a battery tray, and it looked like a monster gnawed at it. where did you get the piece of alum. for the mount at too?

I didn't buy the aluminum, it's just some pieces that weren't going to be used at work.
I'm not really sure where other guys get their material from, but if I was going to buy some it would be thinner and higher grade stuff than I used (mine is pretty heavy).
The motor adjustment slots are a bit tricky. I marked out where I wanted the slots, then drilled a line of 3mm holes as close together as possible, and used the dremel with a router type bit (I don't know the exact name for it) to get rid of the remaining material.
If you do one like mine or the rc monster mounts then it also holds one of the center diff bearings, so you want all of that to be as staight as possible, otherwise the center diff will sit at an angle.
If you make a mount like cart213's (I assume his is the other ST-1 you saw) it still uses the stock diff holder on both sides, so it won't have to hold the center diff bearing.

This thread on truggy racers explains the steering mod.
http://www.truggyracers.com/forum/in...howtopic=17753
Should end up looking like this.
joeling said in that thread that you don't actually need to cut the steering ackerman for it to work.

cool thanks joeling so basically all you did was move the tie rods to the inner mounts. awesome Iwas trying to figure out how to make it turn better!
Now if I could just get my hands on a motor mount, I have a big Neu motor tht needs a home!
