Has the Mini LST2 good Diffs?

Hi Guys,

Yesterday I bought a used Losi Mini LST2, I red many negative things about the diffs from the Mini LST..
Are the diffs from the Mini LST2 also crappy? Or can they handle a Brushless motor?
If so, I will sell it asap

Same diffs. Everyone hates them. I would sell and look for another mini MT. The xray M18MT looks rather nice.

No, save yourself the time and frustration, just throw it away! The mlst is a really cool truck, just the diffs need to be solid metal and be housed in metal cases. I tried everything available and ended up with self modded losi viscous diffs. Metal diff cases and a good shim job may be the answer, but I could not see spending any more money on my mlst. I may buy another and experiment with the diffs but the driveshafts are weak, and the center tranny has to have a ball diff for the other diffs to survive. Maybe I can find a good one for about 40 bucks w/o electronics. The steering sucks too, so single servo chassis from exotec would be a good mod, or i coud just copy their design and make my own...

The losi viscus diffs are metal but still crap. We have 2 (GF's son and I) With the upgrade and get about 5 runs with stock motors before the diffs go. They just sit and look good. I wish there was a good fix for this. The only reason they are still here is they were gifts, and I have trouble selling gifts. Pisses me off! Forgot about the driveshafts splitting where the pins are, or the pins sliding out. I have shrink wrap on the drive cups so I do not lose the pins, but the ends still split. This is the reason I have not bought an 8ight T. I do not trust losi stuff.

I have an lst and a xxx-cr and have owned a mini-t. All were good products, the mlst just suffers from poor design and worse materials...

Ok, so I'll sell it immidietly.. I hope I'll get more money for it though :P

Everyone gives the MLST a bad rap. I had an original one, that I put all ball diffs in. I ran 7.2/7.4V with 7,000kv motor. The diffs held up fine, other than loosening up themselves. I just started running them tight and locktite the diff nut. This was with the stock diff pinions too. I will say they do seem to have their share of problems, I always seamed to bust arms/bend hinge pins from doing cartwheels.. I now have a M18T and it is a rocket with only 5,000kv @7.4V. It seems to take a pretty good beating with no breakage. You can't go wrong with X-ray.

I loved my mlst2 with the exotek single servo conversion and mip centre ball diff. It's a lot more fun to drive than the xraym18mt, which isn't really a mt at all.

Also boiling the plastic parts of the diffs seemed to work well. Too bad one18th.com has gone. There was a lot of usefull info there.

You can mod kyosho mi-st09 diffs (nitro half-eight st) to fit in the mlst. Someone on ebay sold them already modded to fit in the mlst.

Hmm, had not heard of that mod, with metal diff cases and the kyosho diffs it should be pretty good. I always had problems with the ring and pinion gears loosing teeth, so I figured it was case flex. The viscous diffs were ok once I removed the oring seals and replaced them with solid washers. The outputs were pulling out under force and squashing the oring. Bad design, IMO.

Go the M18T and put MT tires on it if you want an MT. The M18MT is great but the dual shocks are for the weight of the nitro and don't work that great for the electric version. Also the stupid body posts extensions on the MT suck, they break really easily. Better to just get the T and use MT wheels. Other then those small issues it is a great truck. The main reason it is so much tougher then a MLST is because it weighs half as much.

The mlst2 diffs have metal ring and pinion gears. if you boil the rest of the plastic diff parts you get a pretty solid diff. And with a mip centre ball diff and the losi dual disk slipper you have a pretty solid drivetrain.
The xray needs upgrades too before it's solid. You have to upgrade the xray to aluminium shafts and aluminium shocks (my plastic one leaked out of the box).
