smokin ESC question. - 02.18.2009, 11:02 PM

I was driving my stock e maxx the other day in the sand with paddle tires installed. This is the second time I have had it in the sand, the first time it sounded like sand got into the motors. So this time I though i'd try to sand proof the motors. This could have been my mistake. I put a nylon stocking over the motors to keep the sand out. It ran good for about 10 minutes or so then it shut down. I took the body off and the ESC was smoking. I unplugged the batteries as fast as I could thinking that would help.

Its an e-maxx 3905. I wasn't running it all out for 10 minutes, just regular driving, throughing some sand around.

Is the speed controller fried?

Try it again and if it doesn't work then call Traxxas.

It sounds like it is fried. Does it still run? Even if it does you will probably have to send it in for repair soon. I don't think that the nylon stocking had much affect on the esc smoking. Running in sand (especially with paddle tires) will put a lot more stress on your esc. If you use this set up in the future, it may be wise to use smaller pinion gears to give the motors some more torque advantage in the sand (they would draw less current that way too).

Is there an aftermarket upgraded ESC that will run with my stock motors and not burn up or should I just hook up a cooling fan to my stock ESC when I get a new one?

The Castle MM or MMM can be put into brushed mode. I'd go for the MMM for the built-in BEC, higher voltage, and higher current handling. And the upgrade to BL would be one step closer.

+1 on that! If you can, go ahead and get a free replacement. But if they say pay for it....PSHH go MMM

I just got an email from castle. I'm new to this but if MMM means Mamba Monster Max then they said that I would have to get 2 of them to control both of my stock motor for now, until I upgrade to one brushless.

Nope, either they misunderstood the question, or you misunderstood the answer. One MMM (Mamba Monster) can control BOTH stock brushed motors at the same time, AND do it better than the stock ESC.

So one (Mamba Monster Max ESC V3) will control two titan 550 motors and all I would have to do is reprogram it to work with brushed motors.
Is there any way to water proof the mmm or at least seal it from the elements somewhat?
thanks

Yes, one MMM will easily handle two Titans. Just put the motors in parallel and then hook them to the proper MMM motor wires (only two of them). And, the MMM has a conformal coating to protect it from casual splashes, but there really is no way to seal it totally and not negatively affect cooling (without mods that is).
