Certer diff VS locked tranny - 10.30.2008, 12:14 AM

Is there any way to put a center diff in a savage. Would locking the stock tranny be better? If so how do you lock it? I've been looking for a way to lock it but every time I come across some thing it dosn't look like it will work.
I have the newer savage witch is the 4.6 ss. In side the tranny on the older trannys there is a small ring in front of the one-way bearing. Thats is what you jb weld, but in my tranny there isn't that little ring. Is there any other way to lock it?
Getting back to the diff thing I think I have seen a couple of people who have done it. Each one looks some-what similar. Metalman's looks the best because it is inside the tvps. lots of protection. Where Kap's looks good as well, but there is not much protection for the motor being out side the tvps in all. If someone knows where to get some kind of conversion that would be very much appreciated. Thanks

If you can swing it, go for the center diff. It will be easier on the front and rear diffs, there will be less rotating mass AND less overall weight, and it's just so much more awesome .

As for locking the tranny into 2nd, I haven't the slightest idea. I have never opened up that tranny before (only my Savage 25 tranny that came with my Savage).

Thanks, where did you get your diff and mount from? Your right about less weight though you really don't want a truck over 14 pounds.

The center diff in my Savage is a Hyper 8 center diff, filled with 100k oil. The center diff/motor mounts I made.

Cool, does the diff unload all the power to the front? If it does can't you add thicker oil? Thanks again.

The diff does noticeably unload to the front tires, but I think it's due to the diff oil leaking out. Not to mention that the truck weighs at least 13lbs. and the tires were pretty soft (high rear traction). And yes, thicker oil will force the center diff to unload less.
