rustler vxl replacement motor - 04.12.2009, 09:23 PM

i am on a tight budget and i put a nice sized dent into my vxl's motor after jumping 20ft+ in the air. the shocks are all toast and won't hold oil any more, so it smacked the ground pretty hard.

would this motor be enough to push my rustler vxl around on 3s lipo? would it run too hot?

ammo 36-40 3900kv motor

it is the same width as the vxl motor but it is also 16mm shorter. the vxl motor is a 36x56 and the ammo is a 36x40.

i know performance won't be the same but on 3s, i'm sure it'll still be insane. i only ran cheap tenergy ni-mh batteries anyway with the vxl.

Do you still have the vxl esc? if so, you can just buy a sensor cable and run a 5.5r or other novak motor. they are pretty high quality and shouldn't heat up too much. A forum member (takedown) ran a setup with the 5.5r and got a 80 mph Rustler. If not a Novak, look into maybe a used vxl? or send yours in?

in theory a shorter motor will run hotter than a longer one provided everything remains the same...if cash is the problem go with either another VXL motor or a "L" can Feigao with a KV around 3500 will do

I run a novak 10.5 in my slash, just for fun I ran a 23/86 gearing, after 5min my motor was at 120*...

the motor still runs, but i think it is drawing much higher amps. it cogs more and drains the battery much faster. it heated one of my 8 cell 3800mah tenergy packs to 260F. the shrink wrap had torn and was melting. the battery also had a pretty bad odor too. i think that pack is toast. the motor was only 110F. the esc was 125F.

yes, i still have the vxl esc. what 5.5r motor are you talking about? is it a novak motor?

almost forgot: my tenergy 3800mah packs usually only get to 120-140F.

if i keep my gearing low enough, (50mph on 3s) do you guys think i could get away with that motor? ammo motor are pretty notorious for running cool.

looks like a replacement VXL rotor will get your system back to the original status. but note that the battery will never get reborn as new, old packs usually generate more heat and last shorter.

....What a Blue Sky....

i think the rotor is the part that is still good in the motor. it still runs smooth and if it didn't draw so many amps, it wouldn't be a problem. i usually get about 15minutes of runtime of my cheapo tenergy packs but i get about 5-6minutes now and it killed both of my tenergy 3800mah packs. (they only cost me $17 each though)

the can of the motor is dented. is it possible to get everything but the rotor?

I would try a different battery pack and this maybe the excuse you need to go lipo
