FUBAR'D Hex Hub? - 06.18.2010, 01:43 PM

I'm experiencing something that is about to make me flip out. I have some 23mm rims mounted on my Losi, and I can't get the hex nut off. The problem is, when I try to loosen the nut, the hub is turning inside the rim hex and I can't get a good bite on it with some needle nosed vice grips to hold it in place. The hub assembly is in the way! I'm afriad this awesome Commanche rims of mine may have to be broken up and ruined now. I can't cut the hub off, nor is there any other way of getting that wheel off. I have never had this happen before, and I am NOT happy! Any suggestions?

Jason

Can you lock onto the driveshaft inside the A arm?

Grab it as close to the wheel as you can.

Maybe this will work.

Are you remembering the backwards thread on them??? Other than that, wedge a screwdriver into the outdrive? If that still doesn't work, pull the hinge pins and remove an arm, then you can get a grip on the shaft.

Yes, these are CEN 23mm hexes... so the backwards thing doesn't apply here. The plastic rims are getting worn and soft I think. I have two tires now like this. I pulled the pins and got the wheel off, drive shaft and all. But I'm going to have to put in the vise to get them off. I can't get a good bite w/ vise grips.

These rims may have seen better days I'm afraid. At least my Big Joes are salvagable!

Doesn't that mean the wheel is pretty much ruined? If you want to salvage the hexes you might have to just cut the wheel apart, I don't see how you could use it again if the plastic hex is stripped out.
