5S Lipo setup in a Mini E-revo -
04.15.2009, 10:48 PM
I was having a discussion with a friend (coolhand_country) and we were talking setups for the mini E-revo, I said for 5s i would use a 1200 to a 1500kv motor and gear to the speed i wanted (around 35 tops) he said should go 2000 to 2200 kv and gear lower. I want your opinions, I know all the theories and the differences, I'm not worried about that I'm just wondering what others would do with this setup. The plan is for 5s with a quark 33 amp pro-car esc, My motor of choice will be a medusa V2 afterburner 28mmX32MM 1500kv
Work because i gotta, play because i wanna

why do you want to run 5s if you only wanna go 35? you can do that with 2s lipos in parellel on the stock esc and motor. it goes 30 with a 7.2V nimh.

small size motors like the 380 in the mini E-Revo handles very high RPM due to its thin rotors. IMO you can run higher KV and gear down.

The point of running high voltage, in this case, is not for top speed, but for efficiency. High voltage geared for a medium
speed results in low current -------> high efficiency and little heat. Also this allows you to use a smaller (and cheaper) ESC.
It allows your batteries to give you more runtime.... the benefits are huge.
I say go for it. Maybe even go 6S. But Id actually say use something like a 1800-2000kv motor on 5S and gear down to get
around 35k RPM. Either that or 6S on 1500kv motor. What voltage can that 33A esc handle?

This is exactly why i want this setup, purely for efficiency and cooler running. I am basing this setup on my RC 10 gt conversion, I have a GT with a lehner 1200basic xl with a quark80 car esc and 5s setup, using 2500 25c flightpower lipo's, it runs stone cold at roughly 35mph speeds at roughly 4 pounds +or- about a half pound, I also get about 30 minutes or so out of it on runtime. I figure the mini revo will weigh only a couple pounds, so the setup should be even better. The reason for such a low kv motor is due to the way the GT runs with the 1200kv, no heat anywhere even in the hot Georgia summers (105*peaks in august). I have the GT geared 20/66 on a 2.60 gearbox with standard Stadium truck tires and the motor runs at around 22,000 rpm's, I figure the same setup should allow me to gear up without fear of heat and gain better efficiency
edit: Almost forgot you question about the esc, The 22 and 33 amp quarks are good for 5s lipo's or 15 cells NIMH, I have not found an esc capable of delivering 6s power in a small enough size, even castle said its not possible to make one that will fit good in a mini

I guess I do not see the point. Most any motor in that truck is going to be pretty efficient. Its not like its a 13lb Monster Truck.

all i'm doing is seeing if what works for the bigger trucks and buggies, works for the smaller scales. To the best of my knowledge, no one has tryed anything like this. I have toyed with high voltage in a 1/10 stadium truck (5s), but not on a smaller scale. To be honest, till now, there haven't been many batteries that could be made small enough to test this way and i look forward to being the guinea pig

How long do you need to run for???? I could get 45+ minutes on a 3s 8000 pack in my Rustler VXL geared to the moon.
I am thinking about getting on of these mini-revo's too, but I can't see needing to run more than 30 minutes or so at a time. I would get bored before the pack dumped.

Just looking at what can be done, I have played with 1/10 high volt, now i want a 1/16 high volt setup. I guess the main reason is that with the smaller battery packs, the max C is close to the max continuous of the esc/motor combo. I figure the higher voltage will lower the amp needs and allow the batteries to run better, longer and with less stress

If you are going up to 5s why not go all out with 6s?

If you read post #5, I said all i could find were 5s capable models in this size. I even asked castle about size on the MMpro in case it could be used, they said they were still working out the specs, but were only figuring to class the esc as a 4-5s tops esc. I found a kontronic 40-6-18, which is a 5s as well and might be small enough. I do not have a pistix, so plane esc's are out, besides i need motor brakes anyways
for those waiting on a project, i still got to get the money up for this. The thread was asking opinions on which motor for the given voltage, based on personal preference. when i can afford to try this, i will certianly provide pics and video if i have a camera available
