Tekno Revo 3.3 conversion help -
07.08.2012, 07:28 PM
Hello fellow RCers whats up? This is my first brushless setup. And I am disappointed in performance or am I doing something wrong? My first run is using 3s zippyflight max 5000mah pack. Gearing 17/38. Acceleration sucked and so did top speed. So I tried 6s and not much gain in performance. I went to 15/38....and the same result. Using Castle Creations 2200kv motor and HK 150a esc. I used a programming card to set everything that should give me mad acceleration and max throttle. I am using a Hyperion 1420i charger. How do I know my batteries are fully charged? Any and all input will be appreciated.

1. On the batts....w/the hyperion it should tell you the % in the batt.
2. When you tried 6s were the batts wired correctly together as 2 3s packs in series or was it a single 6s pack?
On 6s that should almost be uncontrollable so something is definitely wrong. I would first check batts for fully charged, then check esc settings. Make sure voltage is correct, punch control etc...

I tied the 2 3s in series. So the TCS on the charger is the charge percentage of the battery, correct? Well if that is the case my first pack was fully charged and the performance was very weak. Could I possibly have the motor connected wrong? The instructions didnt give a clear description.
ESC Settings
1. Voltage cutoff=3.4v/cell
2. Running mode= Forward with pause then reverse
3. Motor Timing=Normal
4. Initial acceleration=Very High(highest setting)
5. Throttle Percent Reverse=30%
6. Throttle Limit=90%
7. Percentage Brake=40%
8. Percent Brake Drag=0%
9. Motor Rotation=normal
10. Neutral Range=.4%

I am not familiar with the HK esc unfortunately. Check ALL solder joints to insure correct amount of contact. Not sure on motor with out seeing it but check anyway. Check voltage on each batt cell to to make sure you don't have a dead cell or two.

Hey man thanks for the help. It had to been the Throttle Limit set at 90%. Ha now the power is stupid on 3S. Just made a couple of passes(lost the pinion screw). I cannot imagine 6s. But I am gonna try to get this thing to 95mph. According to the RC Calculator it is doable.

Bare in mind the calculator is 'theroretical speed'. Also if you want to do speed passes then that set up can not be used for general bashing. Just an FYI if you didn't know :)

Depending what tires are being used you should add for tire balloning as well, typical tires will grow .5"+ very easily and will factor in to the top speed.

I agree with what is being said here. A high-speed vehicle is a something built/designed specifically for that purpose. Running it also in "bashing mode" is asking for trouble. Those speeds are hard on electronics (and mechanicals for that matter), so expect failures if you are trying to achieve those speeds.
And, as said, the calc is theoretical. It actually gets less accurate for higher speeds because some factors (like drag, wind resistance, etc) play exponentially bigger roles and so are more difficult to account for. But in short, if you are shooting for 95mph, your vehicle should be designed to do 120mph or more.

I have a feeling this will struggle to get much past 70mph with 6s lipo & the 4274 2200kv motor; only one guy has ever managed to crack 90mph with an erevo, and he was using 6s lipo with a Neu 1515 2700kv 1.5D. He also used onroad tires with fishing line around them, zip-tied suspension, 24/36 gearing ( Mod1.0 gears ), a modified wing, and had a mile of open straight road...

Apparently 88mph was the best he managed with the Neu 2200kv motor- you will not have much luck trying for these speeds with a vehicle not set up for them, so think carefully about what you are planning to achieve...

I was going to state much the same but figured the OP is going to go through exactly what we all did when we first got into HV RCs, thats to go fast as possible and having pipe dreams of 100mph+
I just hope after all the trial and speed runs he still has viable electronics when sanity comes back and realizing a efficient set up on 4s is plenty to have tons-O-fun.
If you wanna go fast put that combo in a TC ?

The truck is shifting into 2nd gear? Or is it locked in 2nd gear hopefully?
Do you have any other ESC to try out?

Hey thanks for the input. And much more would be appreciated. Ha thats the video I saw that inspired me to try and beat that. My truck currently has already zip tied suspension. Locked in 2nd. I believe bigger diameter tires will yield a higher top speed. Trying to get a Garmin unit to measure speed. We will give it a run on the 2200kv motor, 6s. And then we will move up to the 2700kv just like he did. I dont know if any rules apply to classify it as a Revo. Or what mods can be done to it and still keep it in the Revo class. A TC would be to easy, but we might give that a try next. I will keep u guys updated.

Well there really aren't a set of rules unless you wanted to do it officially. Then the Revo would fall under the open wheel class along with 1/8 truggies and buggies. Only other rules is to video uninterrupted from start to finish of you want to claim high speeds, showing the truck and 0 on the GPS or radar then show full speed.
Might want to look into getting a Mamba Max Extreme like in the XO-1 with the extra caps added. Would help alleviate the ESC in high speed running.

But that would mean he would need to have it unlocked with an iPhone/iTouch. Simpler to just add an external cap bank to the existing ESC...

Hey fellas how r yall? Well small update. Off to a good start for speed(I think). Got to 43.6mph(using Garmin 101 GPS) on 3s. Also got a set of right front control arms broken. I am using the Traxxas talon tires(junk for hi speed). I am waiting for my Ipanema Monster slicks. I dont plan on running any faster until I get them. But if I use a more open area I might just try 4s before I get the tires.
