Stick with Mamba 8000, or switch to 6800? -
01.21.2006, 04:53 PM
I've currently got a 8000KV mamba with a 2S LiPo in my RC18T. It goes like heck, but the motor does get pretty hot...I'm pretty sure I need a heat sink for it. However, I'm wondering if I should switch down to a 6800KV motor.
From what I see here, most folks like to get the lower KV motor and gear it up to get the speed. I'm wondering if I should do the same thing with mine? In other words, get the 6800 and add a few teeth on the pinion? I'm currently running the stock 55/14 on it.
The other option is to drop a few teeth on the pinion to alleviate the heat problem.
Any suggestions?

well your problem could also be that it is undergeared and not ever geared.

8000 should be okay, Ryan uses one on his 18t, with 8 cells.

I am a fan of the slower systems myself, actually. The 8000Kv is a great system, but I am a bit more fond of the 5400 or similar speed range systems. These are already too fast for the 1/18 vehicles, but more voltage could easily be added for stupid speed if it is in the need!

and you get more runtime. I've heard of people using the 4800 motor with 3s lipoly and getting 45 minutes and wheelies in a rc18t
Work because i gotta, play because i wanna
People here hate Nitro, I love it. I start it, run it about 50 ft from me and it dies, I go after it. Perfect exercise

yeah, probably! i manage a good 20 minutes with my T and the 3S 1650 mah.
(with the 8K that is)
the 8K is plain redicilous, that's for sure. but i think with a 4wd it's more fun than with the mini-t.
For sale.. Mini-t.. :p

make sure you don't meet a big Bernard Senner dog... (like mine met my sisters...)
it will shred your micro vehicle, and the dog wasn't even impressed..

Welp, I reprogrammed the ESC and set the start power to "High". That seems to have alleivated my heat problems. I was driving it in a similar manner to what I was doing before, and temps were 160. I figure once I get a heatsink on there, I shouldn't have any more high temp problems at all.
And yes, the 4WD on the 18T is wonderful. It will still wheelie, but you can control it pretty easy. I'm probably going to drop a few teeth just for kicks to play with the torque, although it has quite a bit already. I've got the dirt hawgs tires on it, which run well on concrete and off road. It's a great little truck, and I intend to keep it a long time.

The 6800 in my 18MT is more than enough for me, funny that one of the fastest vehicles I have is also the smallest!

My brother has an 18mt with the 8000kv mamba and a 3s LiPo and stock gearing. He said he has never experienced any heat problems. He had it clocked at 54mph. Should it be faster with that setup or does that sound about right?

With more gear it should be good for upwards of 60+, but if he is happy no need to break it. I have heard claims of over 65 with the 8000kv and 3s lipo

What gearing are you running on your 6800?
I've got 11/60 on mine and it's a wheelie monster. I flip it on its lid so much, the wheels are in the air more than on the ground. This is also with start power set to "low" and running either the stock 1100mah, 6- IB1200 cells or a 2S Thunder Power 2100mah Lipo. My motor doesn't even get warm by the end of a pack.
