Fans on MMM V3 quit working

After 3 or 4 weeks using two MMM the fans quit working. Now I had to pay around 50$ to get replacement fans + cases from CC..... (+ shipping to germany !)

Did you have similar problems ?

Offroad racing seems to put quite a toll on the fans. When my fan died, there were a couple of things i noticed. One was that the coils in the fan motor seemed to have been rubbed to the bare copper strands and that the actual fan connector broke off from the board. I then bought a couple of 3racing 30x30x6mm fans off ebay for about $6 each shipped from China to the US, but the fan blades were a little small. I was fortunate enough to be able to fit the old fan blade right on and solder fan wires directly to the board with out issues. The fan seems to spin quite a lot faster now that I have have done the upgrade, but I don't know if that is a good thing.

Unfortunately, modding the case to easily accept replacement fans without opening it will void the warranty. But, if I had these problems, I would mod the case so the fan sits on top of the case and the wiring was somehow routed outside the case. Wouldn't solve the problem, but would make replacement a whole lot easier. Small 5v fans can be found at many electronic places (allelectronics.com, bgmicro.com, etc) at a cheap price.

But, some people have found that securing some type of grill/mesh on top of the case helps make the fan last longer. Some cheap screen door mesh would probably work well.

next time i buy an esc i might look for a pistix adapter and buy the phonix 100 or something along thoes lines.
look to have a larger heatsink area.

The trouble with the airplane ESCs is:
- Not built to handle the burst currents that cars pull.
- No good motor brakes, so you need to use a mechanical solution.
- No reverse (unless you have some mechanical solution)

If you're running a reasonable setup you don't need the fan, we always pull ours out right away, one less thing to worry about. Highest temp I've ever seen is 150, so the fan would have just turned on anyway.

Really? The fan in my Savage Flux comes on all the time, yet I have never seen an ESC temp over 100f when I measure it.

Direct the gun from the side to hit the sinks or hit one of the gold motor leads.

yeah that is what I have been doing, even put the DX3S temp sensor on one of the gold motor plugs and got the same result.

WOW where do you live? What is ambient there I mean? What temp is the motor?

Temps range between 15c and 35c ambient, fan obviously comes on more in the hot weather

Last bash it was 15ish out fan came on a few times, motor peaked at 110f

Highest motor temp I have had was 145f on a 35c day. Fan was on quite a bit then too.

Hey Fastbaja5b... you mentioned this in another thread... I thought about this a little more, and I think you might not be temping the right spot. I used to get these low readings too. But after I cut the side grill of and replaced with some HD flyscreen, I find I get a higher reading thru the mesh...

Yeah but that sort of thing voids warranty so I don't mess with it, if/when the ESC fails I'll go from there.

That's very normal for MMM. I've replaced two fans for my MMMs. There are better ways than to waste the money. Just find some 30x30x7mm 5V rated fans that can be easily find in electronic stores, two or three bucks for each. They work as well as if not better than the stock Castle delabeled fan.
