ahh noooooo...my oh so reliable MMM - 07.25.2009, 03:53 AM

after bragging all this time...well...here's the story.
race day was sick, little mud, fun.
final 20min main on a zippy flightmax 5s 20c (yes 20C is too low but i dial out the power for that setup).
well after race i put the revo in the van, in a hurry as the rain had started so i left the main pack plugged in. but MMM powered down.

after i got home i went inside, cleaned up the bench while it was free of RC's.
came back to the car 20 mins later and FARK!! major smell and an uberpuffed lipo .
ripped the lipo out and threw away outside in the rain and took revo inside, mesured the resistance of MMM and it's a dead short across the input leads.

deans melted, little black soot around the active wire on the MMM board so it died peacefully

ok...you reckon it's my fault and should chuck $60 in with it on it's round world trip? it was working fine till i found it bout 3/4 hour after it's shutdown.

Ouch. That sucks.

I always unplug...always. Risking my $150 ESC with my $360 worth of packs is not worth it on my G2R.

Sorry to hear what happened, good thing the car RC and the car weren't damaged being unattended like that. Sounds like seriously weird fluke ???

I retired from RC, now life is all about guns and long range shooting.

BTW: An ESC will register as a dead short at first if the caps aren't charged up. A meter outputs a small voltage and if the caps are discharged, the meter charging them will look like 0 ohms. Give the meter about 10-30 seconds and you should see the resistance start to climb as the caps charge...

That sucks man... I had a similar failure, but my RX wires yanked themselves off of the board. For some reason I wasn't upset...

Then it's dead and there's no point in trying to revive it, sounds like.

something else too.
on the same day my mates MMM was playing up after the race.
links up fine and the brain seems to be ok (still counts lipo's etc) but it went all funny after that, glitching and no response. thought it was reciver but not the case so it got express posted to castle along with mine this morning...lets see if this express post is all it's cracked up to be!
it must have either been a fluke or they dont like wet-ish days?
casue my friend is...lets say...a sunday driver (over 50 yo), geared for 40 on 6s never uses top speed and is one of the slowest steadyest drivers at the track with a very conservative throttle curve. so it seems unlikely it was mmm fail...more likely his was less water proof? (was one of the transition V2 to V3 ESC's)

My Monster went up in smoke at the RC-M bash yesterday:-( Truck was muddy after practice so I hosed it off, keeping water away from the esc, I can't say that some of the mist didn't get in but these are supposed to be ok with a little moisture. Then I used theair gun to blow all the water off the chassis, gavethe esc a blast too just to be sure. Set everything on the bench and a few minutes later went to plug in the next pack and out came the magical smoke! This esc has been solid since I got it in April and has seen moisture before and never had a problem, my v3 I sold with my revo seen plenty of snow and never had a problem. Gotta get ahold of castle today. Thankfully Mike had some extra monsters with him yesterday and I was still able to race, however some unfound electrical gremlins struck during the main, esc just kept shutting down and finally wouldn't power up at all. Afterwords I plugged it in and all was fine so. Gotta do some trouble shooting there.

I don't know what it was but I had the same with my grevo.

I powered the car to the start line and then went to start racing nothing! Just about scrapped the thing but thought I'd try again for main.

Hey presto it worked fine - nothing changed...

They must be suseptable to sun spots!

PS that compressor had a lot of water in it.... You could eaily have blown more water into your ESC...

Yeah, compressor did have a lot of water but I figured with the conformal(?) coating it's supposed to be able to tolerate some moisture. Shouldn't have been puddled up or anything like that. Guess I'll see what CC says

*puts more pieces into the jigsaw*
so....what have we learned? water/mud on both my race day and the RCM bash.
my mates didnt have as much mud but was more watery/water vapour while mine was a little muddy round the motor bullets.

but yet the day before we raced i was at the skate park and aquaplaning across small puddles, water mist must have got in then for sure..yet it only failed when i didnt un-plug it

well least i now know that i'll deffo be un-plugging after day is over from now on!
