Mechanical Brakes on Hyper ST? -

Hey, looking at a Hyper ST I am trying to convert (well I have been trying to sell it but getting no bites)
Are mechanical brakes essential? My radio (KO - EX5UR) doesn't have servo mixing so I'd need to use mechanical brakes using a Y lead, would I need to set the ESC brakes to zero so I don't have the motor and mechanical brakes doing the same job? (obviously disable reverse as well)
Does it make that much a difference on these things? Are the gains worth the effort?
Ok thanks, I am looking at using my Hobbywing 80A and 9XL motor geared 17/52 on 4s A123 in this, the calculator estimates a top speed of 33.53mph it's only a temporary set up while I save for a Tekin combo, would this set up be reliable or am I trying to push too much truck with too little motor?
I also ran the same set up in my mbx5 for quite awhile and as Chris said, what temps closely as the 9xl will heat up fast if gearing is not right
1. MBX-6 T8 1900KV, RX8 ON 4S
2. MBX-5T 1520, MMM ON 5S
3. MBX-5 ONROAD CONVERSION 1515, MMM ON 5S
4. MRX-3 ON ROAD CONVERSION 1512, MMM ON 6S
5. TEN T 2650 T8, MMP ON 3S
Yeah I appreciate that, I figure geared to 30-35kph as ppl recommend, and with a heatsink fan on the motor I may get it to last, only concern is the relatively low voltage of 4s A123.
