my new RC8 truggy - 02.27.2010, 09:43 AM

i've always been a losi buggy person, (except fopr my RC8 buggy) but when i got a $60 off coupon from tower, i had to get this.

i was kinda suprised at the size of this thing. it's a good bit larger than my gorillamaxx G-4.

I also like factory builds. i'm one of the few guys who hates building unfamiliar models. Still, the price was such that i had to pick it up.

the build was actually pretty easy, and the instructions were clear. It took me about 5 hours to complete and i really like the results.

there were several things that i liked/disliked about the rc8te.

dislikes:

1. the battery/esc tray is a joke imo.... it's tiny, and is made of very thin brittle plastic. Luckily, the losi 8ight battery/esc tray is a direct bolt on and has worked GREAT.

2. not a fan of the radio/servo tray. the servo arm is bolted directly over the receiver box, and you have to unscrew the servo horn/saver to open it. not a big deal though.

3. where the hell are the shock clips?! they include a few for the guys who don't have the threaded shocks yet, but not nearly enough imo. also, i couldn't find one place online that carried the replacements. I ended up cutting a little pvc pipe and using them as clips with the few that were provided. this actually worked very well.

4. NO TIRES INCLUDED!!!! AGH!!!

likes.

1. huge motor mount. i like that because it can accomodate big pinions.

2. awsome drive line. my biggest peeve with the losi 8ight is the damn cvd pins sometimes work themselves out. (i have since fixed that issue with a spot weld )

this is not an issue with the rc8. they have grooves machined into their rear pinion couplers and include retainers that fit vey snug. great engineering idea.

3. massive turnbuckles. these are just plain huge.

all in all, it's a GREAT truggy. It's fast as shit, and handles awsome. i would definately recommend it to anyone. i have the rc8 buggy too, but i think this deserved another review since it's a truggy and there are some large differences.

i also made this thing waterproof.

i bought a high torque digital traxxas servo, and ballooned my receiver. the mmm is covered in liqui-tape, and has already been submerged. this is a BLAST in snow!

here are some pics:

enjoy!!

I must suggest getting a better servo! Traxxas' idea of high torque isn't much, it would be high torque in a 1/10 stadium truck but thats about it. There's a reason it takes two of them in an E-revo or E-maxx and you have just one in a bigger truck. I know good servos are expensive, but they are so worth it!

yeah, i may do that. i got it mainly because it's waterproof, but you're right. it's low for a truggy.

i might have to liquitape a real HT servo to keep it waterproof. thanks for the reply.

glad to help. you can buy them pre-glued or just the tires seperately.

thanks.

I'm not sure about the dimensions. i looked around, but couldn't find any numbers on the size. one thing for sure is i've never found a battery pack too big for it.

the largest packs i've had in it were (2) maxamps 3S 10,000mah packs in series and their dimentions were: 59mm X 158mm X 32mm(x2). that being said, there was still room left. I've used everything from 2-3S x(2) 5000mah as an average: thunderpower, flightmax, zippy rhino's, neuenergy, hyperions and maxamps...all of them fit with plenty of room. Hope that helps.

EDIT: here's a link on where to buy it:

i added some savage flux tire and wheel combos cause i like to bash with it and they look like they're a long lasting tire on the street as well.

the only issue with these is the intense ballooning i had before i belted them. they slid all over the freakin place. after i belted them using Over_Revo's tire mod (thanks btw ) they hooked up very well with no more ballooning.

here's some pics:

the other thing i did was lock the center diff. i do that alot with my buggies and other 4wds if i'm not track racing them so i can get optimal power to the wheels. i can get alot more control on every other surface but dirt that way.

that being said, it was wheelieing like crazy so i added a traxxas wheelie bar. it was pretty easy to do. i just took an e-maxx wheelie bar and drilled 2 holes into the rear plate and screwed it into the same holes my wing used to secure the wing mount.

it's still fully adjustable.

so that's the new mods to it. it makes this a beast on the street, and alot of fun to bash. enjoy!

basically it's wrapping 60lb (or higher) braided fishing line around the smooth part of the tires to create " belts" on the outside. this will keep the tire from ballooning. i used 4 rows on the flux tires and 4 on my buggy tires. after you wrap the fishing line around the tires (i do each row 4 times) i tie it off and then put a couple of drops of CA glue on the knot so they won't come untied. it works very very well.

here's a few pics:

hope that helps.

no, as long as you use those few drops of CA glue over the knots, they'll last as long as the tire has any tread. i haven't had one come apart yet.

i was out at the track for 4 hours yesterday running on 5S and not one came loose.

here's a pic:

(they might be a little difficult to see with all the dirt on the tires, but they're all still there)
