MMP and MMP 1-cell fan test at startup? - 04.06.2010, 12:58 AM

Will the MMP 1-cell even run the fan? If so, will it do the fan test at startup?

I hooked up the fan to mine, but when I turn the ESC on the fan doesn't test like my Monster does. Then it occurred to me that the fan might not even run because there is no internal BEC. I just always assumed it would run since the port was left on it. Or will it work, but the 1-cell version doesn't do the fan test at startup?

I know I can hook the fan into the receiver and have it run full-time, but I'd much rather have it connected into the ESC and be thermally controlled.

Can anyone with even the regular MMP confirm that it does or does not do the fan test at startup?

My regular MMPros do the fan startup.

In the 1 cell version, I do believe the lack of BEC will prevent the fan from running. And come to think of it, I thought the 1s version didn't even have a fan?

I wonder if a temp-controlled fan could be added with a little trickery? I know the BEC probably powers the fan, but is fan ground-switched , or positive rail switched. If it is ground-switched, you could run the fan - to the proper terminal in the port, and run the fan + directly to your external BEC.

I added the fan to my 1-cell version, posted a thread about it awhile back. The weird thing is (a) I told Castle I wanted to get a fan/shroud from them for my 1-cell version and they never mentioned anything about it not being able to work, and (b) why would they leave the fan port on there? They made the hardware changes to remove the BEC, so why keep the fan port if it can't be used?

I PM'd Thomas so still waiting to hear what he has to say.

The fan does run on start-up with the regular Max Pro. I'll have to grab a 1s version and stick a fan on it to test. I checked with the engineers and it has all of the hardware to run the fan. It may not have the software turned on though. I'll try to find a 1s version and test it myself, but I'm thinking it doesn't work.

Well at least if it's a software issue I could ask real nicely to have it enabled in an upcoming firmware update...

That's not what I expected. IIRC, there were a couple of failures where the BEC gave out and when that happened the fan wouldn't work either. So, I just assumed the BEC that supplied the receiver and servos would also power the fan too, just switched via software based on temperature. I could be confusing the MMPro with the MMM though, or maybe just confused altogether.

We're all a little confused Brian, but that's what makes it interesting.

Apparently it does not run directly off the BEC. The engineers were discussing that exact question after I asked if it would work. My eyes kind of glazed over when they started jabbering away in their engineering jargon. But the end result that I could gather was that it did not run the fan off the BEC itself. Pat may see this and offer some insight on where the fan actually gets its voltage from.

Sounds like good news, still might be a possibility of getting it running like the regular MMP. Thanks for checking into it Thomas.

Any updates on the MMP 1-cell fan situation Thomas or other Castle folks?

The update will come as soon as I swap out the connectors and plug the fan into my Rx to run full-time.
