monster mamba and cases - 05.19.2010, 03:38 PM

i busted a BEC in my monster mamba. this isn't the first time it's happend from me jumping, but i really want to prevent it from happening again.

i searched back as far as i could in forum threads, and i saw posts about V1's and 2's having foam in the bottom of the case to prevent the bec from slamming into it.

is this something i need to do now? this is a v3 or v4. i thought the cases had been modified, but i'm still seeing fan wires and power wires getting a little mangled and such upon opening it.

can someone please help me. i'm sick of sending these back for something so small.

i would use an external bec, and still might in the future, but if the internal breaks from an impact will the rest of the unit work? please...... help me, help me, help me.

anyone?? i spoke to a castle tech today, and he seemed to think it was a busted/cracked BEC component.

when i turn it on i get the start of a chime, but it just stops and then i get really slow steering and very little throttle. then if i pick up the esc, sometimes it will work normally. then others, it won't even work. just a blinking light.

what's weird is when i turn it on when i'm trying to bind my receiver it goes into a full turn on and arm sequence. but as soon as it binds, it goes into the cutoff mode again. i tried another receiver and radio , but it does the same thing.

that reaLLY sucks because i had about 2 inches of foam under the esc to protect it from shock.

i opened it up just to see if i could see anything overt, and nothing was obvious.

i think it's a V4 (the board was blue).
anyway, is there anything else i can do?? this really sucks guys. this is the second one in 2 weeks, just this esc's FIRST run.

the jump was no bigger than about 4 feet!!!!!!!

i should have asked the tech this when i had him on the phone but i had a 3 year old needing lunch.

1)should i cut a hole in the bottom of the case where the bec is so it's got room to flex??

2) maybe a foam strip inside the case under the bec?

3) no case, just pack it in cotton and duck tape??

c'mon guys, help me, i'm DESPERATE to try to get an answer for this.

I currently run 3 MMM. One W/MIKES mount, and two W/L$si mounts. No problems W/any big jumps,or hard landings.I use one layer of double sided tape, and zip ties to hold my esc. down w/trx mount.

Got the MMM in my Ve8 mounted using the Traxxas mount and included foam tape; it has been run hard all winter racing season with no problems.

With the original V1, guys ( me included ) dremeled a bit of clearance on the bottom half of the case, underneath where the BEC coil is located. The V2 had a foam pad underneath the coil ( inside the case ) but Im not sure if it helped a whole lot- not sure if the V3 & onwards have extra clearence or not....

Neil,

I opened it up and i could see a faint mark on the bec and case bottom where the case had hit it. More specifically, i could feel a rough spot where i believe the top of the bec had hit the manufacturing sticker on the bottom of the case. So i think you're right, there needs to be some extra clearance there.

i know the cases from V2 to V3 and 4's were supposed to be a few mm bigger, but i'm wondering if it was enough for some of the bigger jumpers who might get more case flex on harder landings.

i've got some good suggestions from you and a few other folks about how to tackle the problem. i think it's definately fixable.

thanks for the replies guys.
