Rookie brushless racer in need of opinions - 07.26.2010, 10:34 PM

I have a 4x4 Slash running 10/40 or 9/40 mod one gears...3s 6000mah lipo...
My VXL esc keeps over heating no matter what gearing I run. My friend Brushless Boy (Ben) has suggested putting capacitors on the power leads to control the voltage ripples from my hard driving style...

I am on a very tight budget due to a little one on the way so I have to work with what I have at the moment...

Any thoughts???

Caps may help. I think you may want to try an external bec. I know the old mamba max would get hotter on 3s and a bec would help keep it cool.

There is also a fan made specifically for the vxl esc and is recomended when running 3s. However a fan is just masking the problem, the problem being that you are drawing more current than what the esc is capable of handling. I would recomend going back to the stock mod.8 gearing and running a lower ratio

RC-Monster RC8T 1515 2.5D/MMM/5s RC-M 4500mah
SC10 MMPro 13.5T 2s NeuEnery 5000mah
RC18T Mamba 25/5400kv 2s lipo + 6s NiMh

I thought Traxxas advised when running 3s Lipo, the fan over the ESC heatsink was essential, not optional.

I do think the VXL system is on the brink of being a little inadequate for the Slash 4x4, basically a small buggy...

I know you're on a budget, so I would try the fans on the motor and ESC. What connectors are you using? Maybe solder on some 5.5mm bullets for even less resistance. What lipo's as well? New or old?

Try finding the past path of least resistance. Otherwise, I think you'll have to save up and get a different motor. A Feigao 9L would make a good choice on 3s in the Slash 4x4 and could be had for like $60 or even cheaper used.

I set him up with an aveox (1509 sized) of 2768kv set up to run great on 3s. But the vxl esc will not run the 4 pole motor.. He has every component aside from an esc. I'm gonna try the basic bandaids to get the esc to last until he can buy a better unit.

Going to install some low ESR 3900uF capacitors to help kill some of the current ripple, and install an external BEC and not use the crappy linear regulator in the vxl. Scrubbing 12.6v to 6.0 creates a lot of heat. I think it will make 15 minutes

We did the External BEC today...Over heated in the grass...We are going to the track tomorrow for a t and t...
If it over heats we are going to try Capacitors. Hopefully that works! If it isnt already fixed... Having Ben at my side has helped greatly! And He def knows his s$!t !!!!!!
