Rule of thumb for CC-Neu motor heat? -
06.23.2010, 11:33 PM
Hello,
Just installed my 2200kv motor in my Revo 3.3 conversion. I have decently low gearing for bashing (16/40 on 5S, with a MMM), and although the motor temps are much much cooler than the 9XL I had before, it still got quite hot after hard bashing.
I don't have a temp gun, but is there a rule of thumb (like: if you can keep your thumb on the motor for 5 seconds, it's ok) I could use?
Thanks
Loa

Get a temp gun, thats the rules.
You've got a $600 truck, but haven't spent $19 on a temp gun? Do it.
THIS is the one I have. I reccomend it.

Loa,
If you can touch it for five seconds, you are hardly pushing it.
The motor temp should be kept under about 100C (the magnets are rated operational up to 180C.)

Oh... So much more than 600$ :-D Anyway I got the point. Towerhobbies from Canada = you pay more for shipping than your item, but I ordered a nice one from Dealextreme. Some ppl in the comments said they used it for RC.

Agreed, everyone should have an IR thermometer in their toolbox.

You know what would be even nicer......
If said IR thermometers actually read the same temp... Emissivity be damned!

Yeah, that's a big problem with IR thermometers -- temp a shiny surface and the temps are off -- WAY off. We have that problem with some prototype motors we build -- we don't want to spend the time to have the case anodized, so they ship them with just bare machined aluminum surfaces. And then you can't get an accurate temperature with an IR gun anywhere on the case.
Always pick a black, non-shiny surface (if possible) to temp with an IR thermo -- then you will get a reasonable answer.

Also depends on the thumb! I'm a bit of a wuss like that, I think my wife's showers are too hot etc I find a motor too hot to touch for 5 seconds when a contact sensor like on a DX3S shows a temp of only 110-120f!

I leave my E at 77 (normal for the Flashpoint) and go off the motor can and keep it under 160. A little anal but I don't burn up motors!
All I ever wanted was an honest weeks pay for an honest days work.
