How to get bearings out of carriers? - 11.11.2010, 02:17 PM

Hi guys!
I got a little problem here, the ball bearings in the rear aluminum axle carrier of my slash 4x4 are shot and I can't get them out of there for the life of me.
Put everything into an oil bath for a while, still no chance of getting them out.
Anyone of you got a good tip on what to do?

Throw it into the freezer overnight, then hit it with a heat gun for a few minutes. The aluminum will expand faster than the steel and assuming its not stuck via rust/junk.

Good idea! Thank's!
But judging from the condition of the other parts, I assume it's rust or dirt. Probably both. And lot's of it too.
I just talked to a chemist and he said I should put it into citric acid over night. I did that to one of the carriers, the other one I put into coca cola, since I've been wanting to test that myth for ages now!
I'll also get a small ultrasonic bath tomorrow, he said that should work great, he uses one for problems like that all the time.

If all that fails, I'll put the carriers into the fridge and try the heat gun trick.

If even that fails, I'll finally have no excuse left to not get the 6mm shafts from Tekno RC.

If you have access to a press you can press them out carefully if all else fails

Problem is they are 2 identical bearings in the carrier, both get in/out in the opposite direction. So to get a tool to, for example, press out the outer bearing I'd have to remove the inner bearing first and vice versa.
And off course, in both carriers neither of both bearings can be persuaded to get out of there.

Update:
Citric acid failed
Coca Cola prevailed

Got all the bearings out, but they are definately shot. No chance of getting them back into working order.
Put them into the ultrasonic bath (really nice piece of equipment btw!) a few times, they do look nice now, but still won't turn.

Thank's! Me too

But it was nice to see that there actually is something to the urban myth of coke being an acceptable rust remover

To add another urban myth about coke, it makes white clothes whiter when put in the washer. I use it to wash my white Navy uniforms.
