Unusual wear in front diff issue...need advice

Hey all...in my mbx5t, my front diff is wearing out...gear wear, much faster than the rear. Both diffs are shimmed correctly..so I am stumped as to why the front is wearing out faster. I did change out all the gears at the same time so they all were new together.

Any ideas...I only bash and 95% of the time its in very soft sand

C 20
R 7

1520 on 5c Turnigy 40C running badland tires

Judging by that setup, the fluid in the centerdiff is fairly light, so you get get a fair bit of front tire balloonage, or not so much?


If that was the case though, even to a lesser extent, then the front diffs would be spinning faster much of the time since they get more power sent to them, so it makes sense that they would wear out quicker..

Replace the front diff and try thicker oil in the center. It used to happen on my hyper st before I started using thicker oils in the center

As mentioned rebuild front diff and install thicker fluid in CD but start no lower than 50K, this should be a great starting point.

I have 100K in my basher truggy with 1520 and 5s and it still unloads the front a bit so maybe you'll have to consider 100K if 50K still unloads for you ?

Yeah I was figuring as much that the CD needed thicker fluid, just wanted some more opinions....Thanks all I will try 100K and go from there.

This happened with my Mugen MBX5T and it's nitro, not a hell of alot of power being thrown at it. I would say that due to the nature of helical cut gears (wanting to push away from each other), the bulkhead is flexing and letting the pinion deflect from the ring gear. I would agree with what has been previously been said about having too light of a center diff oil though. Running a heavier oil will slow down the front diff and the ring/pinion wont be trying to deflect from each other as much. If it still happens after changing the center diff oil I would try replacing the bulkhead with a brand new one.
