revive LiIon laptop batts? - 05.22.2011, 09:10 AM

I have a laptop coming with a bad batt. (alienware M9750) new ones on ebay are $90+

Is there anything I can do to "revive" the batt. and were is a good place to buy just the cells? HK doesn't stock stuff like that...

I looked at a few of the packs for that laptop.

6600mah @ 14.8v is 4S3P using 2200mah 18650 cells.

I could have fixed you up with a good deal not too long ago, but sold all my stock.

I would go with one of these cell choices:

Sanyo 2600mah
Sony 2600mah

The LG cells seem to be pretty good too.

Unless you find a REALLY good deal on the cells, you're not going to save much at all.

Just remember, cheaper isn't always better.

To "revive" the pack? When 18650 cells are dead, they're done.

I would open the pack before ordering anything. You need to be sure it is a cell issue and not a BMS issue or even a charging issue.

I "revived" laptop batteries by starting to charge them with the NiMh of the chrger and after the voltage rose a little bit switching to LiIo mode.

If cheap and nasty is your thing... you cuold try going to tool repair shop's and ask for disfunctional Makita Lion battery packs. They are 18650's with 1500mah. Just check each cell before using.

I'll have to open the batt when I get it to see what cells it uses...

I know your not "supposed" to use lipos, but would there be any harm in useing something like a 4s pack?

this is the batt I'm talking about... $90 is the cheapest I've seen new batts...

Not tons better, but how about $75 for a new one?

Not sure if that's what you're looking for or not, but it seems to have the same part number. Only problem is it's from China, so will probably take forever to get there.

Someone actually decided to name their batteries "UltraFire"???

Suggested slogan: "Our cheap eBay cells burst into flames waaaay before the competition"

But I have no idea - they could be very good.

Caution! Beware!

Ultrafire 3000mah are being counterfeited. Old Cells are being rewrapped and scammed. I have received samples of this cell that ONLY produced 200mah.

I'm skeptical of the others also.

The highest verified mah of ANY 18650 cell that I have tested is 2600mah.

If you see ads that boast 3600mah or 4000mah 18650's, Maxamps should be selling those! They are fake ratings.

If you want reliable numbers, you have to stick with the trusted name brands.

Sony
Sanyo
Panasonic
Samsung...........Just to name a few.

The second ones you listed are good and for real.

I would have to look it up, but they look to be the same cell as the 2600mah ones that went into my large scale pack.

I vote for #2.

That company is more to do with flashlights. Other flashlight comapny names are Surefire, Spiderfire, Uniquefire, Trustfire, Smallsun, Longsun, Fenix to name a few but not many of them label batteries. Pretty funny what you said, from an rc perspective.

While you can do this (and I have) they typically will not hold a charge, and if they do they will not put out even half their capacity. Like sikeston said when they are dead they are dead.

Oh, and good luck getting them to stay in balance.
