Waterproof MMM - 12.31.2009, 06:33 PM

Well my MMM will no longer be warrantied! I took the plunge and opened it up and coated everything except the heat sink and the caps with liquid electric tape. I wasn't planning on putting a BL system in my E-Maxx until spring but the Titans are on their way out and I want to run in the snow. I had my MMM sitting in my truggy unused and a 36-70-1600 Medusa sitting there unused and a can of liquid tape sitting on the workbench. I made sure to keep the heat sink alone except next to the caps as I wanted to fully coat the board around the caps so I had to get a little on the HS next to the caps. Threw it all in my E-Maxx and just went out and ran 2 sets of packs back to back with no problems. I'm not going for a lot of speed with this setup, only geared for about 30 on 4s. I also ran a set of 7 cell nimh packs through it without issues. It's about 38-39*F out right now but everything stayed very cool, motor got the warmest at about 100*F. It had tons more power than stock yet not much more speed, exactly what I wanted! Also this setup is much lighter! I will keep track of how this continues to run and let you guys know if I have any issues with the MMM

Cool I had done this a while back. Tons of fun and 0 issues since. I even waterproofed my Hitec servo as well.

dont use silicone to waterproof servo's like i did
my MMM stood up to sever water/mud and it is stock so i am not gonna tamper with it. that amount of water will prolly never be raced in again by the club anyway.

Last year I took my chances with my e-revo as well, never had a problem. But over the summer one got ruined with a little water. So I figured I would give this a shot since going out with it when it was under the body would be packed with snow almost to the point of looking like a body after I took the body off!

Most hitec servos are waterproof from the factory so that part was most likely unnecessary.

Man, that obviously works... but it just LOOKS like a problem waiting to happen!! Does anyone know if such a waterproofing method has had any longevity to it? Meaning, has anyone ever done this, and are still running their MMM a year or two later with no problems?

My feelings are... if it was this simple... why isn't CC doing this at the factory?

Watching him dunk that into the water made my butt pucker! HA!!! Wow.

I have been going strong for two months now with no problems. No excessive heat from what I can tell.

Since the MMM hasn't even been out for 2 years there is obviously no long term testing. I did this but I will keep the esc in my Maxx which will never be geared for insane speeds. I'm sure that doing this and pushing a lot of current through it will cause problems. However keep in mind, the heat sink is not coated and my fan still works even though I have yet to get it to come on. Also these esc are thermally protected, if it gets to hot it will shut down. Since I never plan on gearing for more than 35MPH I doubt I will ever have a problem that is related to the waterproofing. My gearing right now is 68/25 with a 36-70-1600 Medusa on 4s, waiting on a 20t pinion that will be here this week which will put me at about the same speed as stock just with a lot more torque and runtime. So far I have put about 3-4 hours on the esc since coating it with liquid tape. Also this wasn't a brand new esc and I'm sure by the time anything does happen to it it will be out of warranty and I'd have to pay the $70 anyways. Either way I don't really care, I wanted something with programability, lvc, reliability, and low maintenence in my E-Maxx, and this way I won't be worrying when I'm playing in the snow or hit a puddle or waterhole! I will update if I ever have a problem though

Extra precaution then I guess. I have seen Hitecs fail when water enters through the horn rather the casing and seizes the motor. So I placed a small amount of marine grease around the gears and the horn to ensure no water enters from there. Then I plasti-dipped the casing where the two parts meet even though there is a rubber gasket... Just for extra insurance I guess. The heat sink is still open to the elements, though I have never been able to get this servo hot.

Figured a little update was needed here. I'm still running my waterproofed MMM. It was 80*+ here today and I went out with my E-Maxx. I am running a TeknoNeu 1515 2.5D in it now, would rather see the Medusa going unused than my Neu. I have the lowest gearing I can run in it 68/20, the motor is tight against the tranny to get a good mesh. Speed is still more than stock and torque is through the roof. Went out running 4s 4500mah and got 28minutes until I hit the lvc. I was perfecting the backflip through a dainage ditch and running in grass. I wasn't constant wot by every time I came through the ditch it was pinned on the way out until it landed, followed by a run in grass onto pavement and then do it all over again. At the end of the run lipos where at 110, motor 148, and the fan never came on on the esc but it is still working. I have given up on trying to get a reading through the case cause it's not gonna be very accurate. Any how the esc is still running strong and not missing a beat in the hot weather, even when coated with liquid tape. As I said before though, if your pushing a lot of current making speed runs I don't suggest this. In a MT geared for low 30's it is holding up well

I have a MMM V3 I WP Immediately upon receiving it.
I have beat it to piss thermaled it over a dozen times fan kicks on 5 mins into my runs.
I have dipped it and tripped it and That Bad boy still rox your sox.
It started out in a Slash 4x4 with a 2650 running 4S never thermaled there.

Now for the last 6 Mos it has been residing in a xtm rail I modded for maximum BEATABILITY supper beefcake this XTM Rail is with a few mods with a 2200 geared 16/46 on 4S occasional 6S.

The 2650 Is in another rail I aquired by trading a merv.
Scored a Blur ESC (aka MMM that wont accept beta firmware no biggie)off Craigslist for $60.
WP that and it has served for 5 months now exquisitely.

Tape up your HS to keep excessive liquid tape off HS.
Ad caps for insurance IMO.

On my main rail I have cut most the ESC case away and secured it on the HS exposing HS keeping the unit cooler.
That solved my thermaling =).
IMO MMM = Excellent tronics really craptastic case.

I am contemplating potting them next to dump the case altogether and possibly add on a modded HS.
I have some stock AMD CPU coolers that would uberrize cooling if I can separate the HS w/o murdering the fets.

Also, keep in mind that attaching a large/heavy heatsink to the FETs places quite a strain on them physically. I would find some way to secure the heatsink in other ways to relieve the stress...

Well of coarse,I plan on machining material and using the heat sink as an anchor for the ESC after I pot it.
the HS is going to in essence be the case.

Wont that be an interesting "Non warentee return"?
Only worry is high G loads I brutally subject my land missiles too.
I subject My Rails to hell in a hand basket every drive out.

What kind of thermal cement is on the MMM?
Ill attempt to find a deactivator for it.
