Best way to remove rounded off screws? - 02.11.2012, 04:22 PM

We've all done it and its a pain What's the best way to remove one? Usually I would dremel across the top and unscrew with a flat head screwdriver to remove my hex head screws, however the latest one I did was set deep inside a part and I couldn't do this. So what's the best way to get one of them out? Drilling? How's best to go about that without damaging other parts too much? Thanks in advanced

I've always been able to use your first method.

You might need to buy a screw extractor.

those arent drill bits, but you usually need to drill a hole in the the screw to use them. They are reverse threaded and grip the hole so the screw comes out

If you are going to get a screw extractor set, get quality ones. The one time I needed these I bought the cheap-o in-house brand at Home Depot thinking they would be good enough, and they were useless.

For future consideration:

What tools are you using, and what quality are the screw? I find my crappy allen keys do round off quite quickly so I freshen them up again by grinding a couple mm off the tips. Using good quality 12.9 grade screws is advisable too- cheaper stainless steel ones are horrid sometimes, you can see the hex-hole literally stretching as you turn the allen key to tighten or loosen them...

A quality set of drivers will help considerably too.

Unfortunately I haven't that much money !
Some idiot had used flat head screws that were awful in a 2nd hand truck I bought so I rounded loads trying to get them out, normally I just use whatever came with the kit (traxxas or xray) and I have RPM tools...
Thanks for the help I will try to get a set and let you know how I get on
