Mamba XL2 In a Revo (acceptable ripple) - 12.05.2011, 10:41 PM

Hoping a rep from Castle can help me. I just installed my XL2 in my Brushless Revo that has a 1518 motor in it. Drove it for just a bit and decided to download the data log. To my surprise I found the ripple was reading 2.12v and the maximum was 23.8v. So my ripple was 8.8%!!!!!

My ripple in with my other XL2 in my brushless Baja 5t with a 2028 motor on 8s had only 5.5%

Why would a Revo with 1/3 the weight produce more ripple. My lipos are Orion 4700mah 45c rating. I would think the lower voltage, lighter car would produce an ultra low ripple. My lipos are still pretty darn good with maybe 200 cycles at most.

Thoughts? What else do you need to know.

On 6s with a 10lb Revo, is 8.8% ripple acceptable?

I was kind of bummed ripple was higher than my 30lb baja 5t. (running 8s Hyperion with one set, and MaxAmps the other set)

That surprises me -- if you are using the same battery packs, higher ripple means higher current.

What does the max currents from the data logs show? With good gearing, you might be pulling more amps on the Revo due to the four wheel drive-- it's getting the power down where the Baja will spin the two tires at similar throttle levels.

Thanx!

Here is the log

http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/...37/RevoLog.jpg

I confirmed the Orion lipos were all the way charged up. (keep in mind these are not the same packs that I use in my Baja 5t)

And the second run produced the same results.

I will go on to say it ran VERY good. Completely insane and way past the point of useable power....It ran better than ever.

Should I worry about the ripple....or just drive the heck out of it. Are my Lipos Voltage dropping too much indicating they are getting weak....

The actual ripple voltage was not that much higher...2.12volts on the revo...vs 1.7v on the baja...however since the Revo voltage is less (6s vs 8s), the ripple percentage is naturally going to be higher.

Max current was half of my baja 5t. The revo pulled about 108amps max on 6s...my baja pulls 212...on 8s. I am running a BEC Pro on my Baja 5t...Not sure that would make that much difference.

Perhaps I am worried too much about the ripple. Maybe I should just drive it. My guess is the Orions (while I am running 6s) are not quite up to par with my Hyperions and MaxAmps so the voltage ripple is going to be a bit higher.

And while I am getting a higher ripple...it is only for an split second....not a prolonged lenght of time like a full second or two...

Anything you can shed some light on would be great. I am kind of at a loss, but perhaps that ripple is OK......Thanks. -Kirk.

You're comparing apples to oranges. The two vehicles and setups are just too different to compare anything.

Essentially what you have found out is that the orions are lower quality batteries.

This is the info you're looking for:

"A good place to be is at less than 5%-7% of pack voltage for the worst-case ripple voltage.

An OK place to be is 7%-10% of pack voltage for worst-case ripple.

10%-12% is marginal, and is risky.

If ripple voltage is above 12-15% (or more) of pack voltage at any point, it's likely that the battery isn't up to the task, and you run the risk of damaging the battery and the electronics."

Ya, I kind of figured comparing two systems would factor in....but I honestly thougt ripple would be less in a smaller vehicle/system. That surprised me. My Orions are my oldest and most used packs...so seems reasonable. Yep.

I am curius as to pack to pack comparsion as well.
I mean like size of the packs in Mah, as well as the C rating of both.

Peace!
