Double check my thinking... - 07.17.2006, 08:36 AM

Right now I have an MRC Baja king (1/8th scale, 2WD ST for those who don't know) with a Novak Super Rooster, 2x Team Orion 27t motors and an 8-cell GP3300 pack. The motors are getting extremely hot (~160-170) after few minutes of running and so is the ESC. Ambient is high now (~90) but it's so bad that I'm afraid to run it for more than 5 minutes. I don't think it's a gearing issue.

My question is, right now the motors are wired in parallel. If I switch to a Traxxas EVX and use 14 cells, and wire the motors in series, will that cut down on the strain on them? Or no because they are still both getting almost the same voltage? Will it help the ESC? I have a crappy fan on the ESC right now and it doesn't really seem to be helping. I thought the Super Rooster was pretty tough and could take 8 cells and dual motors.

From what I can remember from physics.

Parallel - Less current draw, equal voltage.

Series - Higher current draw, halved voltage.

Darren, you have it half right. With parallel, it's doubled current draw and with series it's halved current draw.

My guess is that the motors are overheating because you are running 8 cells through them. An EVX naturally puts the motors in parallel, but you can easily set it up to put them in series.

7.2v and parallel should pull twice the amps as 14.4v and series. But does that only affect the ESC is what I'm wondering. Either way the motors are getting 7.2v each.

Basically, is it better to run 14.4v and series motors or 7.2v and parallel? I assumed 14.4v would be more efficient.

*edit* Metal you posted when I did. I thought about that too, but why is the Super Rooster heating up so quickly with 27t motors and only 8 cells when it has a 10 cell limit? Maybe the 10 cell limit is for single motors, it doesn't specify?

Have you tried different gearing? Smaller pinions should reduce the temperature on the motors and the Super Rooster.

I only have 2 pairs of 14t and 16t so I guess I should try some more. It came with generic silver can motors and the 14t, so maybe I need to gear down with 8 cells.

A 27 turn motor draws less current and is a less hot of a motor than a 16 or 18.

Picked up an EVX on eBay. We'll see what happens.
