Gearing?????? - 02.29.2012, 07:49 PM

I tried off road this weekend and love it but I know nothing about off road so is 47/14 over geared I use the 2650 castle and mamba monster on 6s I only have 6s so is 47/14 on 6s over geared or under geared and what timing should I use for off road bashing?

on what? If you run 14/47 with a 2650 on a 40 pound truck with 8 inch tyres I dare say you're overgeared

But isn't the 2650 only warranted up to 4s lipo?

It only runs cooler on 6S vs 4S when you gear down to compensate. If you take a truck geared for 4S and run it at 6S it will get very hot very fast. Hopefully someone can chime in if they know anything about that buggy. As fastbaja mentioned the 2650 is not rated to run at 6S so you are going to be running very high rpm.

Also for a given motor going up in voltage will increase temps regardless of gearing from my experience. You will just plain make more power. The only way to offset this that I know of is to go down in kv as you go up in voltage. Keep your target rpm the same by varying the two and your temps will go down. The 2650 can be run on 6s but it's impractical for anything other than speed runs. Most guys I race with that ran that motor were in the two to three cell range. It's hard to tell with gearing without knowing the internal ratio and driving style. I find that driving style will vary the gearing by up to two teeth. I would say gear it as low as you can and keep an eye on temps until you can get a hold of some 3-4s batteries and or a lower kv motor.

A much better motor choice for a 6S set up would be a 1400kv Tekin motor. It would run much more efficiently. Even a 1700kv motor would be much better than than the 2650kv as far as efficiency

1. MBX-6 T8 1900KV, RX8 ON 4S
2. MBX-5T 1520, MMM ON 5S
3. MBX-5 ONROAD CONVERSION 1515, MMM ON 5S
4. MRX-3 ON ROAD CONVERSION 1512, MMM ON 6S
5. TEN T 2650 T8, MMP ON 3S

General rule...the more cells you are running, 5s, 6s, the LOWER the kv motor you should use. Of course there are exceptions to this rule...drag racing, speed runs, etc...

14/51 on 6s with the 2650 puts you at 65mph. That's generally over geared for a offroad setup. You're also not using he motor in it's intended fashion. The best thing for you to do is pick up a 4s pack and use that for offroad with your current gearing, use the 6s on the street. Either that or pick up a lower Kv motor, 1600-2000kv for 6s offroad. I run a CC1518 (1800kv) on 5s geared 18/51 in my LX1e and it's nuts offroad. Way too much power, but for an all around basher that can do around 50mph (with 18/51) it's alot of fun.
