Making a Deltawing RC - 03.16.2012, 07:25 PM

I'm wondering if it's possible to make a Deltawing out of the RC "parts bin". I can see most issues with the steering setup & I'm not familiar with all RC makes, does anyone have any ingenious ideas on how to make a very narrow twin wheel steering system for easy found parts?

You could just stand up a servo so the shaft is vertical, stick a saver on it and connect the tie rods. That'll take car of the linkage part. I think touring car suspension is probably what you'd want to keep it narrow. Make custom arm mounts to keep the geometry right when you reverse the knuckle for the front steer setup.

Edit: Take a look at the steering setup on a Tamiya Hornet to get a visual on the steering linkages.

A rustler bellcrank setup. The drag link is what you attach the turnbuckles to...

Instead of running turnbuckles out to steering knuckles, just eliminate the turnbuckles, move the steering knuckles inward and attach them directly to the drag link. Bandit front wheels are nice and skinny.

The ackerman angles may be off, but some ackerman is better than none

Using 1/10 buggy size tires could work out well. I'm not sure how exact of a replica he's going for, but a bellcrank setup like you described could be problematic. As you turn a bellcrank from center the drag link not only moves to the sides but also moves closer (forward and back) to the pivot point of the bellcrank the further you turn it. With the drag link attached directly to the knuckles this forward movement will also steer the knuckles, either amplifying or canceling out the desired steering movement. At the very least it will result in some weird steering angles and it could result in binding as well.

No scale as such. I was thinking of using a drag rc steering design but that will only accommodate a very limited range
