Build wife friendly ebike - 07.06.2012, 10:35 PM

I converted my old ebike setup to a milder setup for the wife. She seems to like it now vs the older setup.

I'm using a Lyen 3077 6fet sensorless controller with my old Yescom 48v 500w motor. Battery power comes from 18s2p A123 and makes for a nice "assist". I got it up to 27mph. There is a 3 speed button and have still to add the on/off switch and regen button.
I put the ESC in the center of the bike, covered up the wires and the batteries are in the back.

500W motor on 60V? I like how you describe the power as nice ''assist'' Very clean looking e-bike, luv it. Your wife seems a little nervous on it but she'll get used to it very fast I presume as she seems to enjoy the ride.

I've been a little tired of going 45 km/h top speed on my scooter. Me thinking of 28S2P A123 prismatics, a new DC/DC and a Kelly 6kw motor But at that point I would have to license and insure the scooter as a LSM (Low Speed Motorcycle) and limit the top speed at 70 km/h. Limit the speed... Yeah right!

No brain, no headaches.

Thanks Crash. She went around the block with the bike and said it was scary, like the front wants to lift up. Would be cool if she could wheelie that thing.

28s2p prismatics would be nice. Can you fit all of that in the scooter?

Yes I can fit 56 cells in the batt compartment with room to spare.

Your wife thinks the bike is scary now but she might be like me and in two weeks she'll ask you for more power lol.

Might be. Funny how she thinks the bike is scary, but she will man handle the manual tranny in her car.

I data-logged the setup to see what kinda power the bike is pulling with me on it.

speed 1--> 1.09A
speed 2--> 3.66A
speed 3--> 9.62A

If you turn down the phase amps you can reduce the low rpm torque of the system without affecting top speed. Not sure if Lyen is still providing programming software for his controllers, but you can use any parameter designer or XPD programmer on his controllers.

Lyen still provides programming software with his controllers. It took me a while to figure the near perfect setting on my bike.
But on my wife bike I just fried the controller and a new one is on the way to me. I choose the wrong board setting for the 6fet controller when I wanted to reprogram the voltage cutoff. Lyen just told me to use the 12fet EB312 board type to program his 6 fet, due to the shunt mod. Batt A will be set on 25 and Phase at 70.
I blew a phase on the current one and will send that one back for repairs. I'll ask him to upgrade that one to the 4110 fets instead of the 3077 fets for a future bike.

Were you having heat problems, or was the failure fresh off the charger? The 3077s will perform better below 60v.

I cut up some new Lexan side covers for the bike. Batt A set at 25A and Phase @ 70A. 18s2p A123 battery pack. Took it out on the MTB trail for a quick shakedown test. Controller and motor behaved nicely. Top speed was 28.38mph and avg was 7.68mph.
I also added some additional braid wires on the power traces along the fets and shunt.

I'll be sending in the burned controller back for repair and fet upgrade.

Google Map route
