Gustav's LST - 04.04.2006, 09:27 AM

Finished my LST this week,it's running a 1950/10 hi-amp on 8s lipo,36120,using LST tranny with FOC,spur is locked to slipper shaft to eliminate one way bearing, mechanical brakes, lots of titanium. There's 12 Hardcore Ti plates making up the chassis if you include bulkhead plates and pin braces, plus lots of other goodies. It's rather stout.

Weighs 13lbs RTR,have gearing ranging from 21.8:1 right up to 11:1.The ginormous pinions you see are due to the 2.09:1 centre tranny ratio. The pinions were 8mm bore and very wide so i lightened them up in the lathe and made brass bore reducers, made the adapter for 51T spur which locks to slipper shaft. The motor mount was made the old fashioned way,1/4" HE30 angle, hack saw, grinder, files, drill press, sandpaper, polish and elbow grease. The whole mount slides on slots like a nitro engine to set the mesh and the motor is supported at the rear,it's very solid.

My 36120 is out of action so i'm having to run 7xl/9920 on 16 cells in the mean time, still good fun though. The chassis is really sorted, has so much steering and rotates really well mid corner. It's really stable and easy to drive but also very nimble with tons of quick steering, doesn't feel 13lbs to drive.Brakes are awesome too, twin steel discs with fibre pads. You can see the brake servo on the side of the chassis rails.

And more pics, made an upper deck for the esc above the tranny,so it's between the 2 packs and next to the motor. It's mounted on the old fuel tank posts and rubber bushes to help isolate it a bit more from vibration, well protected up there too.

That looks awsome Gustav! That motor mount is very shiny indeed. Wish I could do something like that!

Cheers dude,i built a workshop over the winter and this conversion is the first thing off the production line.Restored an old boxford lathe,it's from 1962,but it's ideal for me to learn on,it's a nice solid machine.A mill is my next prority,it took hours to do that motor mount with handtools.

Looks nice!! And you're right, those are some ginormous pinions. :dft008:

I have a ginormous metal lathe, and 2 types of drill press style mills at my disposal. Thing is, I really don't know how to use them. But my grandfather and father do. Just getting them to do what I want is the big issue. LOL.

On the mechanical brake issue, I see you still use it. How did you wire it in? a simple Y-harness tied into the ESc going to the reciever? I'm looking into getting one for my maxx as of right now. The only thing I don't like is no reverse, however, it's perfect for racing because of no reverse.

I'm a beginner at the machining too,a friend has been teachng me,Only cost me £180 with lots of bits and pieces for it aswell.it basically just needed a good scrub up and a new paint job, there's virtually no wear on the bed or any of the slides and everything is good and tight on it,and it runs dead true,it's the same size as a Myford ML7,that's what i'd like to get when i've fnished abusing this one while learning. It's actually a training lathe so probably came from a college,no power feed but it's ideal for learning the basics.

You can just use a y-harness but on mine the brake servo is on the 3rd channel,if you've got a JR radio or any 3 channel radio with channel mixing (DX3 has this too) you just mix the brake side of the throttle servo with the 3rd channel, then you can adjust the epa and exponental of the brake servo seperately and also it only moves in the brake direction so doesn't move the other way when you give it throttle. If i want reverse i can just unhook the brakes and reprogramm the controller.i added the mechanical brakes out of sympathy for the controller when i felt the weight of it,13lbs.

Where are you guys getting those motor supports? I haven't seen them listed anywhere and would want some for my Savage's 9xl.

BK have them in their store, they're about $15 each i think, they make 22 series and 30 series ones aswell. You could ask Mike to order them from BK,1 is prolly enough but i figured i'd over do it,might put a 3rd on there:018:

Cool, would Mike get a better price on them than I would ordering straight through BK?

Considering shipping (and the fact that you ALWAYS need something else from Mike) I say go through Mike.

Gustav, NICE RC!! Very nice work!
