Hey guys,

I've got a line on a Hyper 7 and I'm trying to decide if it's gonna do what I want or not. Could one of you guys measure how much ground clearance it has? I'm looking for the bottom of the chassis to the ground. I'd prefer it if you could measure with the packs in, so I get an idea of how much clearance I've got.

Basically, I'm trying to figure what has more clearance, a RC10 T4 truck, or the Hyper 7. If they're close, I'm gonna buy the Hyper 7 and start Yet Another Project!

I'm also kinda wondering what kind of rollout numbers you folks are getting. With a 13/46 setup, I'm seeing a rollout of about 1.1. Is that ok or too much for a 9L? I don't want to gear it so much that it cogs. I was thinking about doing a truggy conversion on it for additional ground clearance, but I'm worried about really being overgeared.

any ideas?

How many cells will you be using with the 9L? The last time I ran my X-Terminator (Feigao 540C 9L, Mamba Max ESC, 4s Lipo), I had it geared 13/46, and it has the same diff ratio as the Hyper 7.

I've tried a lot of different setups on my Hyper 7. Always had hot weather issues to deal with here where I live. The combo that I have now I really like. I'm using a Quark 125, Neu 1515 2200kv I think it is and 12/52 pinion/spur. Now that it is winter I could easily go up on some teeth on the pinion.

When I tried a 9L it seemed to run very hot. Maybe a 10L or an XL would be better.

MetalMan: actually, I was thinking of running almost the exact same setup, a 9L, MM ESC and a 3S (for now). Did you run into any heat issues?

Cartwheels: I was looking at a XL motor, but my main drawback is that I need a substantial bit of voltage to get up to any "fun" speeds. I really want to use the MM ESC, because of the programmability and it's inexpensive. Since I already have a MM esc from my T4, I can start experimenting for the cost of a Hyper 7 roller & a 9L (or 10L) motor.

if i'm not misteakin the hyper will sit lower to the ground.

If my memory serves me correctly, I didn't have any problems with heat the last time I ran it. However, I ran it on the street with slick (worn down pins) tires, so it didn't get much traction.

I wonder how well she will run on 3S. I understand "running what you brung" since a high performance 4S Li-Po pack is expensive. You may be a little disappointed with the 3S, but it may get you by to start with.

I started with a Feigao 9L (540C finned version) in my Hyper 7 and it did well except for the glued on end-bell breaking loose on me. If you do go with the 9L (smooth version) be sure to pick up the Feigao 540 motor brace/heatsink that Monster Mike sells.

With 4S, I ran 10/46 and was just under 40MPH. Definitely pick up the Kyosho 46T plastic spur gears for the Hyper 7. They are gentle on the pinion gears, but plenty sturdy. I have run several races that have big jumps and the Kyosho spur gear holds up no problem.

I will try to measure the clearance tonight for you. Battery weight won't really matter on ride height as you normally change springs/pre-load inserts to keep the A-arms parallel to the ground.

Matt, thanks for your insight. Actually, your Hyper 7 is why I'm doing this, haha! Yeah, I'm figuring I'll want more than a 3S, but yeah, it's what I have on hand. I'm looking at the maxamps 3000 4S pack. Has good current capacity and the price is right:

# 20C Constant(60 amps)
# 30C Sustained(90 amps)
# 50C Burst(150 amps)

Next would be the 4000 mAh pack:

# 20C Constant(80 amps)
# 30C Sustained(120 amps)
# 50C Burst(200 amps)

I figure I can get either one of those and be ok, I may go for the 4000 pack rather than the 3000. Seeing that I can get a 10T pinion is good, and thanks for the tip on the spur. Those kind of speeds look great for what I'm aiming for. Looking forward to what the ride height is.

Oh, one more question, do you think a truggy is doable, or is that asking a bit much of the setup?

I would go for the 4000mAH pack. You will be pushing the 4AH pack less than the 3AH pack. Plus you will want the longer run time of the 4AH pack.

A lot of people use the 9L, but you may even consider going with a 10L. The lower KV motor would let you run a larger pinion gear. The 10T I was running is on the small end of pinion gears. Mike and Tower only carry 5mm Mod1 pitch pinions going down to 9T. Also, if you did want to try a Truggy conversion, the higher kV motor would let you compensate for the larger tires by going down a few teeth..... maybe down to 10T. Also, the higher KV should give you a little better efficiency.

I took a rough measurement of the front and rear clearance on my Hyper 7. The front (after the lip-up) is about 0.9 inches. The rear is a little higher (over one inch).

Hmmmm. I was hoping for a bit more clearance than that. Probably will work ok with 4WD. The reason I'm asking is because I was running a RC10B4, which really didn't have enough clearance for running on much of anything besides a prepared track, or concrete. Anything but the shortest grass was difficult to run in. This is really just going to be a durable toy for me, haha.

Going with a 10L sounds interesting. I'm guessing those are going to be more tolerant of overgearing. With the stock setup of a 13/46, the rollout is 1.23, which is kinda high. An 11T gets me to a rollout of 1, which i've found keeps BL motors more happy....happier if I can get below 1, but then the speed tails off. It'd be great if I could run a 13/46 without heating problems. I'd just like to a have a solid troublefree setup that gets me around 35 - 40 mph. Looks like a 11/46 with a 4S might do it.

You do know that ride height is adjustable right? ;)

1/8 tires are a little taller than standard 1/10 truck, btw.

1/8 buggies will tear it up on grass compared to a 1/10 buggy or truck. Jack it up a little for extra clearance and you won't be disappointed. Grass can put a lot of stress on the electrics though so you have to watch the temps, but it will have no problems getting around unless you have really thick/tall grass.
