Where to mount U BEC? - 08.25.2006, 10:53 AM

I havent seen much talk about mounting requirments for the UBEC. Is it something that needs a lot of protection, restraint from movement, or seperation from the ESC or reciever?

I have my Ubec mounted on a custom plate plate attached to the Maxx tranny, also next to my esc and so far do not have any probs. Its very securly held down by a zip tie.

Whats your setup?

I zipped mine the the side of my receiver box with sticky tape. You can really put it wherever you want.

I have mine held onto the power leads with a rubber band. Works great. That way its suspended in mid-air so hard knocks won't damage it.

Since the UBEC is digital, I mounted mine right next to the receiver, but used a piece of aluminum as shielding to prevent reduction in radio range. I don't think I have to worry really since I'm using a Spektrum, but I try to keep all noisy electronics as far from the receiver and antenna as possible. I also used some rubberized weather stripping as padding because it is so thick.

Brain;

did you ever noticed that the people who take the biggest precaution always seem to run into trouble? (interference/glitch etc)

and those who just smack their stuff onto the truck are the ones with almost no problems at all..

(Yeah, i know your name is Brian..... :p )

So, is the ubec a "noisy" piece? I wouldn't think so. I've seen them mounted on the side of the steering servo too.

Sometimes yes. But sometimes, the people who take the most precautions have a higher standard of quality and aesthetics (perfectionists). So, a "problem" to the first individual might not even be noticeable to the other.

I've taken what I believe to be the necessary precautions in all of my conversions (3) and have never had any kind of interference problems, even with the stock Traxxas AM system. Would there have been problems had I not? Who knows? I'm not about to get sloppy to find out.

BTW: I'm gonna have to start talking dumb so people stop calling me Brain! :031: :003:

Neweuser: the UBEC is just a PWM regulator, so it will generate some noise. The manufacturer says they have taken pains to shield noisy components to minimize any potential problems, but if you are mounting it right next to the receiver, there is a chance for interference or limited range. Servos usually are not affected because the signal frequency (50Hz-60Hz) is MUCH lower than the UBEC switching frequency (~5kHz-20kHz).

No no, not Pinky! I'd have to leave the forums in shame (or create a new account).

Umm, I think we should get back on track about the UBEC mounting. Yeah, that's a good idea.
