limit C-50 hacker maxx? - 04.11.2005, 12:04 PM

Hello,

Mike and the others, I want to know what the max of the cells is on the hacker C-50 maxx? Because I know somebody running one on 17 cells with schulze controller (18cells)?

I saw that one too, but it's another with single bl on 17 cells.

17 cells on the c50 maxx motor is asking for a thrown rotor if you ask me. I bet it is a powerhouse, though. I wouldn't take the c50 over 14 cells for reliable running/racing. 17 or 18 cells for a speed run may survive, but continued running will put a hurtin' on the motor (tough on a controller, too).

But Mike, that other guy has driven it for about 1,5 years without any trouble, I mailed hacker brushless, and they said it can handle 18 cells.

I think I better trust you but isn't it safe then?

Perhaps this person has the 16 cell c50 maxx motor. they were available in 3 winds - one for 12 cells, one for 14 cells and one for 16 cells. I don't doubt the 16 cell motor could handle 18 cells without trouble, but the 12 cell motor on 18 cells is asking for it. I assumed you were speaking of the 12 cell c50 (most common). Also, there are many factors that vary from one maxx to the next, as well as driving style, tire selection, gearing, weight, etc.. I would not recommend these high cell counts with the common c50 maxx motor. Just because someone has gotten away with it, doesn't mean it is ideal, or that it would work for everybody.
For example, I have run 18.5 volt Lipo packs through a 10 cell controller, using the controllers BEC for the last couple weeks, and have run 12-14 cells through the same controller for a couple years. The controller has held up fine so far, but I would never recommend this setup to a customer, because it "shouldn't" be used in this manner. It works and has worked, but you won't here me telling someone else to do it. There will always be exceptions to the "rules".

The C50 14.4 is like 3000 KV, so going 18 cells, you're at like 20 volts. With 20 volts and 3000, you're getting 60,000 rpm. Probably okay, but it's like running your car on the redline limit all the time. Long term use, efficiency, etc. will be way down. I'd be careful with a fully peaked and topped off 18 cells cuz you'll be at 22-24 volts and now you're running in the 65,000 to 70,000 rpm in first gear and that is reallllly pushing the motor.

Having said that, I've ran my 1920 motor beyond 85,000 rpm for a brief moment - it sure was LOUD!!! Probably took a couple of years off the motors life.

In addition, it also depends on the individual motor. I've run accross some brushless motors that have rotors that aren't "balanced" so they are very loud and I have other brushless that are much better balanced and are VERY smooth and quiet at even high rpms. As far as balancing, the companies don't balance using epoxy or drilling, but maybe should consider it...

Hey Mike, how about it... Monster Mike's brushless rotor balancing system to allow less vibration/higher rpm for the racer seeking that minute edge over the fellow competitors.

Thanks for the reply lipomaxx!

I Heard, also from the dual setup, that you can run stock diffs or robinson gears instead of UE if you put them real good tight in a case, so it won't move and break, is this true?

This is true. I use Maximizer cups inside Integy cases with pretty high power. In the last few years, I have only stripped on set of spider gears (and the diffs were due for a shimming, so it was my own fault). A properly set up diff inside a flex-free case will stand up to some abuse.

yes, but he says it also works on dual brushless, he didn't hade or have any problems, sounds like a good solution.

Yep. This is what I usually recommend.
