how durable? - 01.16.2007, 12:29 PM

so ive had 1/18th brushless stuff, but it never really had to withstand the abuse a 1/10 or 1/8th truck.. im planning on installing a brushless system in my emaxx, but im wondering how well the brushless motors handle dust and dirt? our track can be really dusty at times... ive ruined close to a grand in nitro motors this summer our there..:mad:1 filters falling off, boost chamber fell off, you name it, it happened!! very painful.. but ya gotta pay to play i guess..

but i heard someone mention the fact that fine dust is bad for electric motors? i hadnt even thought about it...
is that true, will the dust hammer a brushless motor? come to think of it ive never seen a brushless truck running in dusty conditions?

heres a pic of my jammin fte on the dusty berm just to give ya an idea what im talking about... purdy dusty!!:027:

dont tell me to water down the track either... its not an option, its way back on a lot and theres no water available.
the rest of the track is pitchers mound clay, but that one berm we made out of dirt we had...

this is what the rest of the tracks dirt looks like.

should i be worried about a brushless motor? or any electric for that matter?:032:

if a motor has holes in it it will suck in lots of dust, i know from drifting on polished concrete with plastic tires.
was the same as your condition, very dusty.
i was using BL first ( novak) then brushed motors ( they rule for drifting imo).
the novak didnt suck in the dust, as its all closed.
but the brushed ones i had to clean after every 2 runs( bout a half hour or so)

Put tap over rear bearing. PUt some silicone around the wires thru can. It
is some tips around for running in sand. That should help you.

Peace!

Yea, a neu with Mike's rear cover is a good choice for any dirt use.

The problem with nitro's these days are that they arent brushless... LOL

I first changed over to brushless motors for the same reason. The dirt and dust where I live would kill any brushed motor within one week of lite bashing. I've even killed a few brushless motors. But now I've learned to seal up the motors nice and tight. Use silicon where the wires come out, I even put electrical tape over the screw holes not being used to mount the motor. The Lehner 1900 motors are great. Not only are they the best motors, but they are completely sealed. Just remember to cover up every pin hole on the motor, including the screw holes not being used to mount the motor. Do that and they will last forever.....or until you burn it up LOL.

Mike, i dont see why a neu would be a problem, the rear would be sealed, and the front may have some holes but the motor mount will almost give it a tight seal ; plus you forgot that G-forces on the truck/buggy when it is turning. That plays a big role on how much sand really gets into your toy! :)

Pretty much they would both be at the same "risk". The neu may have a little spot open in the front, but i doubt anything would go in there.

I think the lehner would be a bit easyer to seal the motor then a neu.
