Shortening windings on Feigao? Too darn long!

The windings that come out of the can are just too darn long and extremely inconvenient. Is there anything that I can do, or is shortening them an absolute no-no? Any other options I might have?

I could be wrong, but I think the wires are indeed just extensions of the windings, making shortening them 99% impossible, unless you are extremely good with a soldering iron and have fingers smaller than an ant (do ants have fingers?). Someone did it once, but that thread is burried somewhere around here. Cant you rotate the motor so that the wires exit in another direction, out of harms way?

Yes, they are just extensions of the internal wiring. Shortening is not recommended at all. Just direct solder some soft wire to them and use the soft wire for connections.

Even if you did shorten them, that's not the end of it. Each individual strand has an insulating coating on it that would require removal if you wanted to solder to the wires. I've read of something like an acid bath to do it, but IMO, it's not worth it.

^ +1. That acid to remove the varnish has the potential to "wick" up the wires and get into the coils themselves - NOT good! Just bend the wires out of the way, but make sure you are certain which way they are supposed to go since multiple bending/rebending will eventually break one or more of the wires...

i heard aspirin and heat should take care of that. If it doesn't you should be able to get rid of the headache it costs to clean each strand from the lacquer.. (Gee, what a LAME joke..)

Personally, it just seems easier to simply bend the wires where you want.

Yeah.. I really have no problem with bending the wires.. I'm just afraid - they're so hard it feels like it might break if I attempt to bend. I guess maybe some heat and slow pressure will probably make it alright.

Yeah, and just make sure the motor is where you want to go. You don't want to bend them over and over. Solid wires don't like being repeatedly bent.
