e-maxx tranny slippen again... kinda... - 04.05.2007, 04:38 PM

hey well i posted here a little bit ago because my e-maxx was in neutral. would sometimes go and then not go. i found out thast it was that pitch fork thing or w/e. well i locked it into 2nd by just pulling it back with a spring and attaches the spring to my revo. did a very good job held it into place even when i launched it 10 ft in the air. yesterday when i was driving it it did the same thing... was stuck in neutral... weird thing was was that i still had the spring tightly on there. was supposed to be in 2nd but it just wouldnt let it...

so i took the spring out and locked it into first and it works fine.. just very slow... so i took it off and started messing with it but even when i push it in it doesnt realize its in 2nd or something... anyone know the problem?

thanks!

Open up the tranny and take a look at the two teeth on the dog gear. They might have been shorn off. There is a little slop between the dog gear and 1st/2nd which places a lot of stress on those two teeth, especially when doing a lot of switching from/to forward/reverse/brake.

Yup, that's the part I was talking about.

If you don't need first gear, you'll be better off locking the dog gear to second gear. You can use the Gorillamaxx aluminum hub (in the pic below) or JB Welding it and/or screwing them together. That will remove the slop and make the gears last longer. The gmaxx way is cleaner and lighter if you can get just that one part. Mike may be able to get one - I think they're $12 IIRC.

I bought mine from Mike a while back. I would think he could get one, but it's hard to say.

do you use a spacer to keep the shaft in position? I guess the drive cup keeps it in place,i machined a brass spacer for mine, maybe there's no need for it.i'm having a mental block here, can't remember what's in there:005:

edit;Oh hang on,i remember him now,if you don't use a spacer the bearing will fall out, dang thant's obvious, see what beer does to my poor brain.

The only spacer I used was a chopped up first gear. I basically cut off the gear until only a spacer remained.

You can just take the 1st gear idler out(little one in the middle),but leave the shaft in,and leave the 1st gear output gear and bearings in as a spacer.
so if you use the g-maxx coupler, only thing to go in is the coupler and only thing that needs to come out is the 1st gear idler gear.i think that's right.

It may sound confusing, but it all makes sense when you open it up.

The traxxas carrier/drive dog can be found on this page, with some other transmission parts. www.rc-monster.com/products.php?cat=48&pg=2 (if your going to get the coupler that the other guys are talking about then you wont need the traxxas one)
If your going to be pulling apart and replacing parts in the transmission then I'd probably replace 2nd gear as well for the sake of $3 (underneath the drive dog on the page I linked to).
I'd get a steel idler as well (you only need one if your going to use 1 speed) http://www.rc-monster.com/proddetail...03idler&cat=48
