Mamba + Rustler = Which? -
05.17.2007, 11:57 AM
Next month is my anniversary and my wife will be getting me my first BL system. I've decided to BL my Rusty before the maxx since she is paying and the maxx setup I want is just too much money to ask her to pay on her salary.
I'll be ordering a Mabma Maxx system from Mike and I'm just not sure which.
I've read up on them all, I understand the cell count limits and that the 5700 will be a better choice for Lipo.
My wife will not let me go the lipo route while we live in our current shoebox, but when we move to a larger place the sky is the limit (or my pocketbook anyway)
I've already ruled out the 6900, so it's a toss up between the 5700 and 7700 systems. Being that I run 7 cell zapped and matched IB4200's I'm leaning towards the 7700 as it will get better performance on nimh.
I'm not a racer, just a basher but I worry about the 7700 cogging. I've read alot more horror stories about cogging and frying 7700's than 5700's.
Should I not let this be a concern since I run high quality nimh packs?
Should I get the 5700 and just deal with the slower speeds for a year or so until we move?
Should I get the 7700 now and when the wife lets me go lipo buy a 5700 motor?
Should I get one of Mike's nifty motor clamps to go with it?
Thanks for your input and assistance. Mike, be on the lookout for a MM + castle link purchase the middle of next month!

I never had any problems with the 7700 cogging. I ran mine on up to 3S lipo. The real drawback that I could see with the 7700 is that it doesn't take gearing as well as the 5700.
You are on the right track though. 7700 for 2S and nimh, 5700 for 3S, and the 4600 for 4S. I've found the 4600 to be the most versatile. You can go from mild and sedate to "what was that blur" speed. The 5700 is also pretty versatile, but just not as much as the 4600. If you want something to run now with the nimh cells and then be able to upgrade later with lipo, just go with the 5700. It is THE middle of the road choice.
Now that I look back on all of my MM purchases, I could probably have done without the 7700. The 7700 only really shines in an on road car or vehicle that has very limited battery space; ie, something that requires running relatively low voltage.

I may go with the 7700 then. My Rusty lives on road. I have an FLM'ed e-maxx that is my dirt pounder.

LOL
You guys and your high RPM motors. I'd recommend going with something alot lower kv. Something around 3000kv would be more like it, but since you wont be able to find any lower kv motors then I'd say you're only choice is the MM 4600. Just make sure you get some ice packs to cool the sucker down between runs. I find it amusing that most people have such a rough time buying a product...when there's another one just like it with a bigger model number. My opinion for rustler and MM motors, 7700/6900=ROFLOL Joke, 5600=still pretty amusing, and 4600=would still be funny....if it wasn't your only choice. But hey, thats just me.

Use the MM4600 & 2S Lipo.
That gives you a motor RPM in the 34,000 range. It also keeps the trans RPM to a tolerable RPM. The 5700 is useable but on the edge. 40,000+ rpm on a rustler trans is pushing things pretty hard.

My wife won't let me go lipo while we live in this shoebox. I'm stuck with nimh for at least a year.
Thanks for your input everyone!

Nothing wrong with MiMH I still run them.
Li-Po is great but not everyone is comfortable with the safely concernes or the investment cost to switch over!

Go to cheapbatterypacks.com and buy some of those 4500mah Elite NiMh. Best NiMh Ive used to date. I have a few IB 4200 WCE packs as well but the 4500 Elites are better. Very nicely priced as well. You could fit an 8 or even 9 cell using a Flat Hump pack style battery.

I use the EB3600 cells hyperasus, and like them alot. I heard that cheapbatterypacks will be selling Elite lipos soon also. Hey DickyT, I saw a picture of your Rustler somewhere, and it looks real nice.

Thanks! It's not on par with my maxx yet.... yet..... Rusty still has some stock parts, but will see BL before the maxx, purely based on price. Mamba = much less than the quark/neu combo I want for the maxx.
Probably saw it here or @ Traxxas

Dude, if your Rustler lives on the road, then go with the 7700. Or the 5700.
I use the 5700 in my Rustler, and use it on road with 12 cells, and off-road with 6-7cells. Its is blazing fast and chews through tires rather quickly. You will not be disappointed with the 5700 or the 7700.

Yeah, I've run them all too, and if you're staying on the road, I'd go 7700. The 7700 on 8 nimh cells is pretty wicked, with good cells. The better cells will actually hold around 1.1v per cell under a 100A load. Not for very long, but they will do it.

My batteries are great for nimh, I have 4 sets of zapped and matched 7 cell ib4200's from SPC (love them) and 2 sets of gp3300's non matched (use for test/tune runs).
I've decided on a 7700 for now. When I move to a larger place (hopefully in a year or so) and go lipo I'll pick up a 5700.
The 7700 will see some dirt, probably in the 10% of it's duty and I'll just gear down a bit for dirt, 13/90 or 15/90. For street i'm planing on starting at 17/86 and see where temps take me from there. I have 13-18, 21, 23 and 28t pinions and 76, 83, 86, and 90t spurs to play with.
Thanks for your input everyone!

T-minus 2 weeks and counting until Mike gets more of my money.
I'm thinking about ordering one of his heatsinks to go with it. Which size does the mamba use? L?
Thanks,
DickyT

Oh wow look at this. http://www.traxxas.com/products/elec...rx_rustler.htm
Finally a company with a brain. 3500kv brushless made to run on 2 and 3 cell. Castle can stick their 4600~7700kv motors up.......I mean.... in someone else's truck.
