My Rustler

I posted this on the temporary forum, but that seems to be dead now and Id like to get some more opinions, comments, etc.

It started as an old style traxxas rustler, and I updated it with the basic transmission upgrades and put a mamba 4600 on 6 cells in it. When that got boring, I swapped the 6 cells for 4s lipo, and then it was uncontrollable. Thats when it started looking a little weird:





I had solved the wheelying problem, but my rear tires still couldnt put down more than maybe 10% of the available power, so things got weirder:





At this point, this thing is ridiculous. It will wheely over backwards (over the wheely bar) just because of how much the tires balloon. But the motor is getting way too hot for my liking and I keep throwing pinion gears off, no matter how well threadlocked the set screw is. So the 4600 is swapped for an 8L and mod 1 gears. The spur is a HPI 44t single speed RS4 gear that I drilled out to fit, and I use a 12t pinion.





I think its now running as reliably as this kind of power and traction in a rustler can. I had a lot of issues with the old style emaxx axles breaking, but the new updated ones are holding up fine. Ive taped the tires up, so theres no more tire balloonage wheelies.

I rigged up a front wing setup to try to keep the front end down. Even with the wheely bar it likes to carry the front wheels an inch or two off the ground.





This pic shows the HPI spur, and the limiting chains I made to keep the rear suspension in shape when the wheely bar tries to make the rear wheels leave the ground.

I still havent strapped the GPS to it because I keep breaking parts very early in my runs. This past time it was the steering bellcrank because of a wheelie induced cartwheel. It also tends to wreck violently, so Im worried about what it would do to the GPS. According to the speed calculator its good for 70ish.

Lets say theyre for making an attempt at grip. It can spin them with no effort at all, but they still make a lot of forward thrust when theyre spinning. Its fast when it manages to stay on the ground, it tends to wheelie up on one wheel and start cart wheeling. I think I need a wider wheelie bar. I want to try maxx sized foam tires, but Im afraid it would eat through them too quickly, and they would get expensive.
