Bonding carbon fiber?? - 09.20.2007, 11:24 PM

I need to make a plate to hold my esc but don't have a big enough piece of carbon fiber. I do have two pieces that would fit perfectly. My ? is can I bond two pieces of carbon fiber together? Or do I have to just buy a larger sheet and start over.

If you need the full strength of the carbon you need 1 bigger piece, if it is severe strength overkill you may be able to get away with bonding it rough it up with sandpaper first then use a slow setting epoxy to bond it, try to get as much contact area as possible setween the 2 surfaces that you glue, which idealy means overlapping them but if you really want a flat sheet you can do a scarf joint, sand the edges at a shallow angle then overlap the angles to make a flat sheet that still has some strength, don't just butt the edges of the 2 sheets together and glue, the tiny contact area will snap very easily.
