need a computer genious's help! - 10.13.2007, 01:04 PM

hey guys our family computer has been taking a dump for a while and its finally to the point to where nobody wants to use it... cept me

here is the problem

if i click on internet explorer it will take FOREVERRRRRRRRR to load up. like litterally 20-30 minutes. if i click on a link... it will take about 5-10 minutes for it to load. im on ebay trying to list some stuff and when i try and upload some pics.. since it has to bring up that new link it takes FOREVER.

now. once it is on the internet it is perfectly fine. lags a little but its bearable. luckily i found a backroute for us so it is not too bad (go to my computer and in the adress bar act like its the internet and it will work fine from there)

so do i have a virus... or is something set wrong... or what the heck do i do!

im not much of a wiz when it comes to stuff like this but if you tell me what to do to possibly fix it i can/maybe do it.

thanks for any help!

Lots of things can cause your computer to slow down.

- check for viruses and spyware
- defragment your C: drive
- check to see if you have too many programs running at the same time. Those sneeky little programs eat of a lot of RAM.
- clean up temp files, and un-used programs.
- Usually a simple RAM upgrade helps a lot.

I'm not much of a techy, but this is the check list I've been told to go through.

download spybot search & destroy here: http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/s...spybotsd15.exe and download AVG here: http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Vir...-10669237.html
What i would recommend you do is download these two programs from another computer, burn it on a cd or put it on a usb flash drive and install it in your computer. Before you turn on your computer, disconnect your network cable so you wont get online. After you install these two programs, run them one at a time and scan your computer, If the programs find something, fix / heal the problem. After that, restart you computer, connect your to the internet, update both programs and scan your computer again. Btw, spy bot search & destroy will ask you to scan after you restart your computer if it cant fix the problem cause the problem is in your memory. I would recommend you using Firefox: http://www.mozilla.com/products/down...win&lang=en-US instead of Internet Explorer to browse.

Heres all you have to do. When you install Firefox, it will ask you if you want to import your books mark from internet explore. You just click yes and all your bookmarks gets transfered. And then rename Mozilla Firefox to Internet Explorer on your desktop and get rid of the old internet explorer icon. That only thing that would change for your mom is the picture of the icon. I dont think she will notice it either :)

I actually had to uninstall firefox recently as it caused any and all browsing to lag at least 15 seconds before it would recognize I input anything (I.E. search or toolbar) But I also downloaded spybot search & destroy and it found nearly 500 bad things on my computer. These two operations pretty much saved me a headache's worth of hassle. Hope this helps. Oh, and the ne IE7 isn't too bad, it actually uses the tabs and everything just like firefox, if that's what you were concerned about losing from that browser.

I use spyware doctor which works really well - It was the only thing that could clean my pc when I actually got a bug.

Check your proxy settings under internet explorer connection settings to.

I wouldn't even bother with Ad-Aware. It won't get everything. I use SUPERAntiSpyware. Its free and gets everything.

Yea, I play games from time to time. Mostly on my 360 and PSP though. PSP more than anything though, since I can play PSP, PS1, Sega, NES, SNES, MAME, NeoGeo, SMS, N64 games, etc on it.
