Revo 3.3 Tranny with all Metal Gears problem - 12.12.2007, 03:20 PM

I have just installed the RR all metal tranny gear setup and I want to lock into second with the new metal gear but the holes in it are bigger already than the stock plastic one, so the mod I see on here won't work, I need a bigger bolt etc ...can I grind bigger half moon in the clutch and use bigger bolts and thread the holes?..has anyone had this problem and resolved it? Here are few pics sorry my cam does not focus right sometimes..

I haven't worked with the metal gear set (yet), so I have no experience with it.

You could file larger half-moon shapes - no harm in that at all. But, will you be able to tap screw threads into those hardened gears?

I've been toying with getting the RR set, but have held off...

One thing I'm curious about; how is the idler gear held onto the shaft (the one right in front of the second gear)? Does the metal set use the same chintzy pin, or did RR provide an alternate and stronger setup - like maybe grub screws?

BTW: to focus your camera better, try pushing the shutter button just part way (this is where most cameras do the auto-focus operation). Once the pic is focused, push the button all the way. Or, you may need to enable the macro setting. Usually, this is represented by some sort of icon that looks like a flower (for close shots) and/or a mountain (for far shots).

Also with a high pixel digital take it further back and then crop back to the actual item that can help.

Yes the idler gear is held on by that weird pin and wire clip ...don't know why they didn't use a nice set screw instead....can a machinist thread something hardened like this? I have a tap and die set, but your prob right it will laugh with its hardness at me if I try to thread it .....hummmm i'd weld it if the clutch was not aluminum and gear being steel....any machinists have any advice to thead this some way?

This guy (boghos is name here) has a locking hub for the second gear that would work, if he still sells them.

I can't find a pic, but its an alu piece that is solid and replaces the clutch. He used to sell them seperately until people starteddoing the (free) mod above. This may be the easiest/ most reliable soln.

Not sure how deep the hardening goes. The gears could be made from hardened metal, or just the surface could be hardened. That's probably something you'd have to contact RR for to get a definitive answer.

In the meantime, you could simply use the stock second gear and use the rest of the metal gears until you come up with a solution for the steel gear issue. Yeah, it's not as good, but at least you'd be up and running until then.

Sorry, that's probably my fault.

I talked to him and I think I am going to send him the gear to make sure it will work with his clutch locking setup, I think its going to be around 25 bucks, figured more people on here would want these if they go all rr metal gears in their revo tranny, I will keep everyone advised...thanks everyone
