Easiest/quickest way to build an e-REVO? -
07.24.2006, 11:06 AM
I've been away from the RC hobby for a long time (10+ years), and things have really changed! On a friend's recommendation, I picked up a lightly used REVO 2.5 on eBay and I've been running it on nitro. The truck performs great, it's really amazing, but all the threads on this forum about electronic conversions have me thinking about alternatives. Electric just sounds so much more appealing to me, without all the noise, fuels, and mess. My question is, what's the easiest path to a brushless e-revo for a newbie? Right now, it looks like a "bolt-together" solution would be the HV-Maxx brushless system, e-maxx transmission, Gorilla G2R chassis, and a decent set of NIMH batteries. Thoughts?
Could you guys give me any pointers on what else needs upgrading, replacing, etc., to make this work? I won't be racing the truck, just playing.

Welecome to the forums.
I would suggest a set of steel idler gears.
The better the batteries the better the truck will run.
A set of lipo would be good for lighter weight.
Peace!

but when you get the g-maxx conversion say good by to your ride hight options, the chassis conversion doesn't give you alot of ride hight costomability. A nice 6-7 cell gp 3300 is a great battery unless you want more run time. and you would like the g-maxx single speed. using steel idlers.

I would suggest a different BL setup. You can get alot more for the money to be honest. A Warrior 9920 and a Feigao C XL motor woud be a great setup and won't disappoint. I would also recommend running LiPo's if your budget allows. If not LiPo's, then a higher cell count. Like 16 or so.

Thanks for the input, guys. Steel idlers are on the list now.
I've been looking at the various BL motor and controller options, but there are so many choices that it makes my head spin. The HV-maxx seemed like an easy route to a similar result, but how much performance am I leaving on the table? If the difference is substantial, I'll try a custom config.
LiPos sound great for run time, but I'm new to this and they seem like they have a steep learning curve for a beginner.

Ok, lets put it this way, the HV-Maxx is a little less than 400 watts of power, the Feigao XL motors, are around 1800 watts...The HV will seem faster at first, but then it will get boring.

You'll also need to ugrade to CVD's all the way around. Oh !I almost forgot . Welcome to the forum. There is a ton of usefull info around here. You just have to look/search for it. If you can't find it just ask and someone will help. Squee is right about the hvmaxx. It might be a good starter if you started with a stock emaxx and was looking for a little more power. I'm sure you want something at least as fast as your nitro maybe even a little more. If you can deal with the hassles of the nitro then a custome setup should be fairly easy for you. If you think that you will want to upgradw to lipo's at some time in the future then I would start with them. Hate to have to buy 2 chargers. I'm not sure if there is a charger on the market that will charge all 3 types of batts (nicad, nimh, and lipos).

First off, CVD's aren't a must on the Revo. The stockers are plenty strong enough. There are plenty of chargers to charge both types of batteries as well. My charger, E-Station 701, is a VERY good charger that charges NiMh, NiCad, LiPos, and Lead Acids. And for the price (~200), you can't beat it...

No problem. The CVD's are a good option, but...not with RPM arms. On a Maxx, thats certainly a no-no, but I thought they would be ok since the Revo arms are far stronger...No so much... I bent a CVD RIGHT after I finished breaking in my 3.3...I'ma just go back to the sliders with the RD Racing hubs and knuckles. I would just assume leave the sliders.

I'm running MIP cvd'sin the rear on my emaxx with RPM upper and lowers on all 4 corners with no problems yet. What sort of problems am I going to have with this setup? My 8xl should be here anyday now.

The RPM arms will flex and allow them to pop out and then will get bent from banging around. I actually think mine flexed enough in a hard turn for it to pop out. Not really sure when though so I can't be for sure. You should be ok in the rear though. The fronts gonna give you the most problems.

Thanks for all the info!
Lipo batteries sound nice, but I think I'd like to stick with something more idiot proof, maybe the A123 battery system. Is this system really substantially better than 14 NiMH batteries, or is it too early to tell?
I'm still looking through all the motor threads on this forum, but it's really hard to get my head around all the choices. Seems like the 7XL, 8XL, 9XL, are very popular, but how do you choose which one? Is that determined by the batteries you're running?

Exactly. The motor you choose is gonna depend on what voltage you run.

I built an E-Revo with the TEKNO kit and I have used the TRX Velinion and the CC 4600 and I've broken the shaft on both, I guess because its a 3.2mm shaft. I'm using 3S 5400 pack.
What would be the best BL motor for the price? Considering I'm using MM ESC and 3s 8000 MaxAmps?
Thanks,
Al
