Tower Terror conversion -
10.14.2007, 01:15 AM
Ok, did the complete conversion to brushless in 6 hours yesterday. Not a bad truck to convert, just had to make a motor mount out of thick 6061. Gave it a trial run and it works well. Current setup is a 7xl with a mm on 4s lipo. I am using 2 maxamps 5k 2s packs in series, held in by emaxx trays. Stock radio tray makes a good mount for the mm and the receiver, with the lid left off.
First run went well, some weird glitching, not sure if my bec is having issues. Also the spur is making a mess of my century 14t pinion. They are supposed to be hardeded, not sure if they are! About 15-20 mins into the run the steering servo gave out, amazing, it was brand new! Not sure if I want to contact tower, but 20mins is a little short on life for a servo! Everything else held up ok. Tower has used alot of thread lock on this truck. The wheel nits had some on and it ruined one when I removed the wheels. I have replaced them with 17mm hpi nuts. Diffs were very tight(ring and pinion), but seem to be wearing in. I will change the servo and try out my new cc bec that I picked up yesterday! I will post pics tomorrow as I left the truck at work.

Yes it took me 6 hours, all I have are basic tools, no mill
Did not even think to snap pics, was p-o-ed that the servo crapped out. And wondering why the glitching is still there, maybe the bec, cheapo chinese products(silly round-eye, you buy all junk!). I have the CC bec so i will try that tomorrow, and a hitec digital mg servo, oooooooohhhhhhhhh!

Hmm, I've seen worse trucks that have been converted. Nice use of Emaxx battery trays too. As for glitching, I can only say maybe its the proximity of the rx to the esc & ubec? They are kinda close together in the front of the truck there, might be an issue, or not...

Thanks neil, appreciated the info about other peoples crap conversions.
HAHAHA
Actually the truck is very strong, nothing has broken yet and I have beaten the snot out of it. I replace the servo with a digital Hitec, and put a hardened 15t pinion on it. This cured the wear issue, and put top speed up a little. The diffs have worn in more, hope it continues and loosens up the drivetrain.

Hehe, I have two ways of looking at things:
1. You can have a good truck, but that is baddly converted (poor workmanship and design) which makes it pants.
2. You can have a really nice looking conversion setup, but one which is put in a crappy truck, so its a wasted effort.
In the case of the Tower terror though it does look like a nice, basic truck with tvps and a very straightforward layout, and the conversion you did was simple and clean- the way it should be! Cant really find fault with that....

Yeah, the terror is not too bad, some design faux pas. I think it is built as well as a traxxas vehicle and the basic idea is very good. Parts quality is not up there with the greats, but it is way better than some off brand crap. So far my only problems have been the steering servo and the wheel nuts. Both have been replaced and no more problems. The truck is alot lighter than an emaxx and the 7xl really pulls it around! I think that it will hold up well, just need to find a body that can hold on to all the flips I do!

Bashed the crap out of the truck today and nothing broke
The diffs are wearing in now and the spur and hardened pinion are doing fine. My motor mount needs to be reinforced a little as it is shifting slightly to the rear. Great runtimes with the 5k packs, got close to 30mins on the first run and they took about 3800mah back when I charged them. The 7xl is not getting very hot, and neither is the MM, but it does have a fan. I think that Artur will be getting this MM to mod and I will do more testing without the fan.

So I dug this old turd out and decided to make a chassis for it. Going to put a center diff in this truck. Since I have a losi e8 mount laying around I decided to pick up a complete 8 diff and mounts. Not sure what to use for center driveshafts, but I have all kinds of cvds and dog bones so I will figure it out. Most likely going to stretch the wb an inch or so. I have an old (but never used) 2.5 maxx body that is thick and would look good on it.
My main reason for doing this is that I need a decent 4s truck to test lipos, everything else is 5s and up right now. Plus if I sold it I would get 2 bucks...maybe 2 bucks!
I will get some pics up of the truck when I get the diff parts in. That way I can figure out the actual chassis length...
Not sure what to use as a power system. I do have a kb 45 10l, 1800kv, which would make for a slower, cooler setup that I could use with a MM...

Sure you would... Just wait until it has the center diff in it! It will rule all, but I may have to overnight parts from japan!

I'm gonna go all the way and offer double that, AND pay for shipping! $4 is not a bad price, but may stretch the wallet a bit...
