Issues with Aluminum Tranny Case for Rustler

Nothing but problems putting this thing on my Rustler. Things don't line up properly, no instruction manual, and overall, getting the transmission mounted up to the Rustler was just a bad experience. The actual transmission case fit together and is whisper quiet with all the gears in there lubed up with some moly grease, but putting it onto the chassis is absolute hell. Who knows, maybe I screwed up somewhere (I'm thinking that's unlikely though, since all the pieces on the transmission itself went together perfectly, I've rebuilt the tail end of my Rustler numerous times, and I dremeled the chassis so that the tranny lined up with stock holes, but when it came time to put the assembly onto the chassis... well, things didn't exactly work out so well).

I'm sorry to say I regret buying this transmission case.

Can you specify where it isn't fitting properly? Any pictures? This is the first I've heard of someone having problems with FLM stuff not fitting, especially the tranny case. I own the Al tranny case myself. When I had my stock chassis it fit just fine.

I had issues bolting the case (with the hinge pin carriers) to the chassis. I do not have pictures at the moment, but for some reason, one of the four large screws would just not go in right (everything looked like it lined up properly; all holes were straight looking and well...aligned, but I guess not?), and in the process of trying to get the screw to line up right, I stripped the head. Soooooo, now it's a majority of the way in (head of the screw is sticking out a bit, but I'm not going to worry about it; I'll just grind it down through driving on some asphalt for a while...), but unfortunately, the head is stripped. All the other three screws went in fine (little difficult, but still went in just right).

I also have no clue how to get those small locknuts into the area where the shock tower screws into the tranny, so I left those out (I'm assuming those were for where the shock tower screws into the tranny at least). And what in the world are the larger locknuts for??? The actual case is great though. Smooth as can be! Mounting tended to be a bit of a pain though.

Any tips would be a huge help and thanks for replying!

Don't grind it off - Cut a slot across the top and use a flat blade to remove it...

Yes, that is what I plan to do. Last night I was pissed off at a bunch of things that are RC (helicopter air frame broke, feigao 280L motor in my Trinity Truggy grenaded its rotor, and then this one screw decided to go ass backwards, so that was the straw that broke the camel's back...lol).

In the mean time, does anyone know what I'm talking about with the shock tower mounting to the transmission case? If I have to, I'll just use longer screws and get creative. I also had to dremel down the RPM A-arms to work freely and decently with the aluminum arm carriers (pretty simple though).

If it matters, this is not the original black chassis that came with the truck about 4 or 5 years ago; it's the gray one.

The case is for the 'pede and rusty, you dont need the big locknuts for the rustler conversion, the small lock nuts hold the shock tower to the tranny case, I just used a small screw driver to manipulate them in there and bite a little thread, then put the screwdriver in sideways as a wedge on the nut and tightened the hex screw. FLM stuff tends to work best with thier own chassi/towers/arms etc..when using other aftermarket stuff I just get the whole section put together loosely and tighten it up all at once. Probably need a dremel for something.. good luck and that tranny case makes it nice/quiet and bulletproof if its the magnum 272 gears.

The case itself is wonderful. I'm amazed that my all steel transmission (RC-monster gears....:D) is so quiet and smooth! I'll give the small locknuts a shot. Thanks for the info.

I can probably fix the stripped head of the screw by doing what Arct1k said; I'll have to also see what's up with the threading and why it's going in improperly.

SUCCESS! Slotted the problem screw, backed it out, loosened up the other screw, held the arm carrier pushed in towards the chassis (to make sure the hole lined up 100% correctly), and with a helluva lotta elbow grease, it went in. Now I just need to put the little locknuts in their holes, and it's 100% done.

Ok, got one of the locknuts in, and that's about all I need to be satisfied. I got the second one halfway in, but after pounding on it and everything, it won't budge any further. So it's just going to stay in there half assed. Oh well, now I just need a pinion, bolt up my medusa, and I'll be good to go!

Ok, all good now (except for that one stubborn nut for the shock tower, but whatever, the tower is plenty secured, and I'm rarely on my lid now-a-days with this truck).

Thanks again for all the tips! Now that everything is together, it's actually a nice tranny. It's unbelievably smooth. I'm amazed at how free it runs.
