Question about the Hyperion EOS0610I -
01.26.2009, 01:32 AM
So I am wondering if this is a good charger? I am selling my mrc 989 chargers as I do not seem to use them much and hate to see them collect dust. I have 4 of the old 5i 50watt hyperions and they get used quite a bit for the small crawler packs and single cell charging when making/fixing packs.
I will need a 6s capable charger, and was looking at the 610i, they are cheaper now as the 720i seems to be replacing them. Should I go with the 610i or pony up another 50 bucks for a 720i? That is 25% more for something I dout I will ever use. I also have no real need for more than 2c charge rates...
They are both 250watt maxx chargers, and I never see me using a 7s single pack, it would be a 3s and 4s pack... I do have a pair of Ice chargers and use them to do my larger mah up to 4s packs. Plus I like the built in balancer and the accessible data from that balancer.
Also, will an ofna 18amp Ps be enough for 250 watts? 12v at 18 amps is 216watts, but i can turn the input up to 14v or so... Not that I will be charging at 250 watts. My largest pack right now is a 6000 6s pack, so 6amps at 25v which is 150 watts. (no losses figured into those numbers)
Any ideas or input from 610i users (or anyone else) will be greatly appreciated!

Don't know about the first part, but chargers are around 80% efficient. To utilize the full 250w output capability, you'll need a PS that will supply at least 313w. Make that 350w to add in a little headroom (never good to push things to their absolute max). 350w @ 12v = 29A. 350 @ 14.5v = 24A.
But like you said, you only need ~150w to charge that 6s 6Ah pack, which translates to ~220w figuring efficiency losses and headroom. 220w @ 14.5v = ~15A.

Thanks Brian, I knew that you would have the eff. #s floating around in your genius! I think I may pic one up, after the mrc chargers sell.

I just picked up a 610i - for the price you couldn't go wrong!
I have two 5i / lba10's for the smaller packs and use the 610i for the bigger stuff/A123 which will take the amps...
I just need to build an adpater for the 6s2p A123 packs...

I have the ACDC versions, 2 be to exact, and am more than happy. Charging 3 to 6s these are the most reliable chargers I have owned. A damn sight better than any of the MRC's I have had which all lie in somewhere in the dump now.

I own a 0606i AC/DC and just purchased a Duo II today (Woot! ). I have had only positive experiences from my 0606i, and it performs perfectly time after time. I could only only expect the 0610i to be even better. The 720i would only be one to consider if you are going to be charging higher capacity 6s or 7s packs.

My only issue with the 720 is that I never plan to charge more than 2c, and it is still a 250 watt charger so it has no real benefit over the 610i for me. I never plan to run 7s, and if I run over 6s it will be 8s and most likely a pir of 4s packs which I can charge on my ice chargers.
Glad to hear positive experinces with the charger. I should have it in a week!

Only good experiences with Hyperion chargers too (using a 1210i). To backup BrianGs numbers:
While charging 9s A123 the 1210i charger shows 30,85V @ 5,4A (166,59W) and my power analyzer reads 221,5W at the 220V socket. I use a Graupner 12V 20A PS. Meaning the whole charging process has a 75% efficiency. Both integrated fans (charger+PS) have to get rid of 54,91W lost as heat.

When calculating efficiency, I simply measure DC current and voltage at the output and input of the charger and divide the two. This lumps the charger's switching PS and CC losses together. But, judging by the amount of heat produced, out of that ~20% eff loss, I would say that ~12% is the CC part, and ~8% is the switcher part. Measuring at the wall lumps charger (PS and CC parts) along with the 120vAC to 12vDC converted. So, 75% is actually pretty good.
The 80% figure I use when I don't know the real figure is generally worst case.

I have the 0610i and love it. Very simple to use, and I've never had problem with it. I only wish it could discharge nimh's. But that's not a big problem since I still use my ICE for discharging nimhs.
There's two sides to every schwartz, he got the up side and I got the down side.

Well, got the charger in. Wow, this thing is great. I definately like this charger. I also worked a deal where I traded another charger for the little 6i ac/dc model, and have a 1210i coming as well. I think I may buy another 610i and sell my ice chargers... That way I will be all hyperion!

I know this may be a little late, but why do you rule out charging over 2C? That may actually be a boundary that gets pushed out by all manufactures in the coming year (given that Neu has the 5C batt's).

I am never really in a rush when charging. I have multiple packs for almost everything I run. Plus I am sure that hyperion will offer upgrades for the 6 series to do over 2c charging if it gets popular.

This is a different hyperion from yours. It is the 250 watt 6s model. Still waiting on the mail for yours to show up. The mrc is a great charger, does everything well. But I only do lipo now, so the built in balancer of the 6 sereis chargers is great for me.
I will have a charger sale ad posted soon. Selling alot of stuff, so if anyone is looking for a charger have a look.
