Replacement ESC for HPI Savage Flux. - 07.23.2009, 10:56 PM

Guys am wanting opinions on a replacement ESC for my Savage Flux. With the possibility of a new class coming up for monster trucks locally I'm keen to have a crack, however there is some talk from people locally that the MMM speedies will possibly be banned on safety grounds. Therefore I need to look at options for a new ESC should this go ahead.

My choices so far seem to be:

Hobbywing 150 A ESC
Losi Xcleron 1/8th ESC
Tekin RX8 ESC

But I am not sure which way to go. I only use 4s Lipo (2 * 2s Hard Cased Lipo as per proposed rules) and would be using the stock motor (Neu 1515 1Y Castle/HPI) geared stock with stock tyres as per proposed class rules.

Any suggestions?

What! Banning MMMs? hmmm.. If they're that dumb maybe they're only banning the HPI MMMs and not the castle ones.. You could swap em out.

MMMs are just as likely to fail as the rest of em.

LOL, that's laughable thought: banning MMM esc's. That throws out the Brushless E-revo editions, and the Flux Savy. What's left? Hobbywing/Hobbycity speed passion, MGM, Tekin, Losi, and a few others? Of those Tekin would seem like the big seller and I see many more MMM systems than I do of Tekin systems.

None of the ESC's on the market are bullet proof and they can all puff their own smoke just like the MMM's. It I were in your shoes, I'd say if I can't run with the MMM esc that I have I'll go race with another group.

Just convince them not to ban MMMs. I remember a thread where it said only like 1-3% of MMMs have failed. I think it's called MMM filure percentage or something. Worst that can happen is a little fire and smoke on the racetrack. Not like it'll explode and hurt anybody....

If they want to ban MMMs then they should ban all the nitro stuff because anything nitro is more dangerous then electric stuff. Poisionous fuel and really hot parts aint good...

I recall it being more around 5%, with the majority of them being then earlier versions. I had a V3 fail. Tech blames the battery, but I'm still running the same battery on both my current V3's and no problems. I blame the pinion popping off, dunno how this would have affect the ESC so much but I think it's a clue into why I had 1 ESC fail.

Yeah I wouldn't buy another ESC just because the oil burners think they're unsafe.

Yeah I get what you're all saying but I just want to keep my options open, so instead of debating why the MMM should / shouldn't be banned I'd appreciate feedback on the options presented.

Thanks.

I'd go with the Hobbywing for a more temporary solution and if you plan to need a long term, I'd go with the RX8. The losi is great too... Whichever you pick I'm sure you won't be dissapointed with the losi/RX8. The Hobbywing might have a failure rate similar or greater then the MMM.

Just checked the thread, saw you posted. The overall rate is about 2%, but I see you have a lot of filures at your club. May it be the batteries most people in your club use that cause the failures? Or maybe just bad luck.

If you had to run something different, get something that has customer support. Part of the price you pay for a nice ESC goes to the tech/customer support, it's part of the premium. CC and Tekin are suppose to have the best customer support for their 1/8 brushless controllers.

If everyone at the club is having the same failure, the "expert" that everyone is listening to may be at fault. Or you are all using crap batteries... I have run alot of setups with various MMM esc and only had 1 v1 crap out. I always use good lipos though. Enerland cells, or better.

I'm running Intellect Lipos right now and so far no issues with mine. I know some have failed with SMC 6000mah 28C Lipos and Fantom Racing 5000mah 40C Lipos.

Well smcs have burned a mmm before,,, and the fantom lipos.. Looked like they rebrand stuff and overrate it. First off there's no way in hell they have a 80c burst. Neu has put real money into developing a 40c pack and it only has a 70c burst. Hyperion g3 packs should be recommended and used. They are very nice packs. The best packs IMO are the up and coming flightpowers, the new hyperions, and neus. No smc, FANTOM, maxamps, or other crap like that. A 30c flightmax/rhino or any 25c+ enerland pack will do great too.

I agree, my Intellect 5000 say 40C and the stores all swear Black and Blue it's a 40C constant, IMO that's rubbish I think personally it's closer to 30C with a 40C burst as per the Zippys.
