What to buy - 07.24.2011, 12:50 PM

I have a few questions on which parts would be suitable for the conversion I did to my monster pirate.1st,which pinion gear would best work with it and would the spur hold up to the torque. The castle 1717 seems like a good choice but which speed control would I be able to use with it.Finally,batteries/charger,what would be a good choice.

Vague, much.

The MMM ( MambaMonster ) would be the idea esc, no question, along with 6s lipo since the 1717 is a rather low kv motor. Ideally the lipos ( either a pair of 3s or a single 6s ) should be atleast 30-40c 5000mah packs to provide enough current- depends n the layout you go for / need to use based on the chassis; pictures of the bare truck are a must.

Gearing will depend on what is available for the truck, or what can be made to fit- the MP uses a center spool arrangement so I'm guessing MOD1.0 gears, hopefully other ofna spurs may fit but you need to see what optional spurs for the MP you can find to get some idea of the pinions needed..

Charger depends on your budget- something which can do 2 packs at once is always nice, though powerful chargers like that need a separate power supply whihc is extra wiring and expense. You could go for a basic single channel charger for much less money with a built-in PSU but charge times for a single 3s lipo will be one hour or more, for a 6s more like 2 hours- some idea of your budget is a must.

The spur gear will hold the torque, it is a mod1 steel gear. The problem is it is huge spur gear, 65T I think and it needs to be that big because of the standard buggy ratio diffs and the big tires. Going with a smaller spur will result in a very small pinion and you'd still be overgeared, unless you go with a motor with around 1000kv. The big spur gear will push the battery tray off the side of the chassis a bit as a result, shouldn't be anything too serious though.

If you go with the 1717 on 6s, I'd start with a 14t pinion. I don't know the exact size of your tires, but if they're close to the original size you'll have a top speed around 40mph with the 14t pinion and 65t spur. Use the search feature on the site to get some reviews on various chargers and other equipment.
