4s Rustler, which motor should I get? -
06.05.2007, 01:09 AM
Which motor would be good for 4s with a MM. I'm thinking a lehner, but I would consider others. For speed I'm thinking in the 45-50 range, but most of all I need it to be able to run long and cool. I'm setting it up to run in dry lake bottoms and sand dunes and other open areas. So which motor would work best?

Frankly, if I were doing a Rustler, I think I'd have to give the MM 4600 system a shot. Of course, the Lehner should be better, but I don't know that it would be worth the extra expense. The MM systems, when run in their intended environment perform very well. In fact, that Rustler will be a beast with a MM 4600 system on 4S lipo.
If you just want to go with the Lehner, and 4S, I'd look at something around the 4000kv range, maybe a bit lower.

The one problem I've seen with the MM motors is they seem to get hot. I have been running a MM 5700 on 3s and it gets pretty hot. Even on 2s2p 6400mah just seems to overheat when going for the long haul. I've tried to use fans but they all seem to break because of the location. price is pretty good on the MM's though. I was hoping there was something better for 4s.

I'm not saying that there isn't anything better, I'm just saying that I'd try the MM motor. When you say hot, how hot do you mean?
Just keep it under 190 or so. It is a cheap motor. If you want something better for the MM, look at this Lehner 1920/7 at three times the price of a MM motor or the Lehner Basic 4200 at twice the price. The 1920 should make for a nice motor that will run cooler. If you want to get stupid, maybe the 1930, but I don't think I've seen that done in a 1/10 scale before.

The only good motor I know of for the Rusty is a low kv Lehner 1920. Traxxas has their new brushless out but the verdict is still out on that one. Good chance of it being worthwhile since it's only 3400kv. MM wont do you any good on 4s. You'd probably get some good speed runs out of it before something overheated and burned up.

Thought about a Feigao 540 12S?

I like the 380c I'm running in my son's Rustler. I'm running the 9t on 3s, but a higher turn would do you right on 4s.

Hey Cartwheels I have 4s in my Rustler with a Lehner Basic XL 2800. Runs a little hot but also runs about 70 MpH. I would say the XL 1600 or XL 2000 would be good choices if you want to keep the speeds down. They are very high quality motors, well worth the price IMHO.
EDIT: Gearing is 19/87

Hyper, why would you say that the MM won't do him any good on 4S? The MM is probably the best bang for the buck controller available for 4S.
If cost is no object, I think that the MM with a Lehner 1920 would be hard to beat. Just about any lesser motor is going to overheat (in your application) at some point.

Mike carries the Lehner 1920 7 turn 4480kv. That might be kind of high. The shaft size is 4mm. I wonder if I can just drill out 1/8" pinions to make them 4mm. I think I'm going to need a lower kv.
The Lehner Basic XL Looks pretty good too. It doesn't look like Mike has those in his store though. It's a tough choice and high prices.

I think the best pinion solution would be to order the right pinions from Mike. If that isn't possible, for what ever reason, you can drill out the holes. You just have to make sure that the drill bit goes in straight and centered. I did a couple using my lathe and a collet. Of course, it also depends on whether there is still going to be enough meat for the threads of the set screw.

I was talking about the MM motor. I highly recommend the MM speed controller. I agree that MM esc and Lehner 1920 is the best combo you can get for a pede/rusty.

Oh, I misunderstood.
I hate to put the comparison into these terms, but the MM motors are closer to Feigaos than they are to Lehners. The MM motors are good for the money, but the Lehners are probably worth every penny of their price.

I was wrong earlier, The 1920 takes a 1/8" pinion.
Edit: Maybe I wasn't wrong, There seems to be conflicting info out there. Anybody know what size pinion the 1920 takes.

They come in both 1/8" and 4mm. Mike has both. Well, if you're really lucky then he still has some with 1/8". Those things are like the last of the Mohicans when it comes to low rpm S can motors that have the 1/8th shaft.
