someone should do a sticky "how to"...... -
04.13.2008, 02:35 AM
explaining how to pick out a motor. and if you've got LOTS of free time on your hands, add in how to pick out an ESC and battery!
I have to admit, that even after getting help, I still don't "get it", and I'm still 150% LOST with this (BL + LiPo)! Maybe it's from breathing nitro fumes for too long, but all I know is I'm about to sell all my nitro stuff, and I want a BL/LiPo setup, but have no idea what to get other than what people suggested. And it's great that I have suggestions, but I don't know *WHY* I should get these items.
does anyone want to walk me through this? either through email or on the phone? I'm soooo sick of nitro and all the vids look great on youtube, so I''m gonna jump into BL. Disclaimer: I have LOTS of questions, no idea what's going on, I'm slightly anal, and known to be rather annoying

I have more expierence with electric, but first you must deciede what type of car/truck/buggy you want to run, what is your budget?
I had been out of the hobby for a few years and I saw an ad for the Traxxas Rustler VXL and I thought "this looks promising" so I ordered one and after a few rebates from Tower and Traxxas I eneded paying about $225 for a RTR and I have never been one to be content with what I have so I trolled around different forums and spent many a late night doing search's and I have learned a lot from this, I upgraded the motor and ESC in my Rustler and now its capable of speeds in the 60-70 mph range, but at that speed all you can do is drag race but it is fun.
I than got the E Revo bug and that is my latest project, depending on how much you want/can spend you can have a pretty nice rig, I have been thinking of selling my Rustler to help recoup some of what I have been dumping in the E Revo. I have seen a lot of the E Revo conversions have been originally bought off Ebay, and if this is your course of action expect to pay $250-350 depending on condition and how much somebody else wants it

Pain -

Yea we feel your pain Mk361e. I would venture to say that this is the biggest problem with taking the plunge into BL/ESC power. With nitro you have quite a few choices when it comes to the engine type you want to run. With BL there are litterally hundreds of configurations that can be setup and run in almost any rig. Plus the changes and advances are much like the PC world in that everything is developing at the speed of light. Just when you think you have something figured out, a new product comes on the market. Unfortunately there is no real easy answer to your question .
If you are going to run anything big like one of the monster truck rigs, there are a few products about to be released that everyone is pretty excited about. Tekin (RX8-MT), CC (MMM), and Venom (MT Pro) are all coming out with an ESC to handle the awsome power that these trucks can be setup for on a truck weighing in at 13 to 20lbs. CC's MMM is to be released sometime this month for about $200 or less. There are a few other ESC's out there that can handle the load, but with a much heftier price tag and problematic issues that go with the more complicated setups.
Motor choices are endless, and there are a few very expensive monsters at the top of the heap for $400+. Or you can go with what is known as the standard for this hobbie Neu for $200 to $400. It all depends on your budget and needs for your rig. Batteries are a whole nother ordeal. Lipo batteries have blasted onto the scene with great results, but things are begining to get very competitive price wise and a struggle has emerged for the most powerful and efficient battery packs for the price. So yes it is very confusing, but the only way to get educated on any of this is to read the experiences from the guys here, and/or trial and error on your own part . Like everything else in this hobby there is a learning curve for everything you do, and there is no easy answer for any of us. Good luck with your adventure and have fun.

As others have said, a definitive guide to say which motor to go in a specific vehicle is hard to do. I have tried to address this topic with this page. It's not perfect, but at least gets you into the ballpark.
As usual, figure out the vehicle it is going in, the top speed you want, and the battery voltage you want to use. It's generally best to go with as high battery voltage as your ESC, charger, and wallet will allow. It's much easier to get high power with higher voltage.

I understand that you can't make something that would say what motor to use in a specific app; it's probably not possible. BUT, a guide that tells you how to choose a motor, and gears, and stuff would be nice. I mean, how many times can you post questions and bother people with the same stuff, ya know? It's great that people here will answer with good suggestions, but I want to know how THEY know, so I can know too.
I want to be able to pick out my own stuff without having to post a question every time I have a new idea.

lol, thanks! Again, it's not exact, but gets you going in the right direction. Before you go purchasing anything based off the results, I would post your intended buys to get other people's opinions...
