I got a question for any Neu owners out there. How many of you are using some kind of dust cover on your motor? Is it really necessary? I assume the holes are for cooling, and the motor has roots in the aircraft world where dust isn't as much of an issue. Does covering the holes cut down on cooling but keep abrasive dirt out of the motor? Is it better to leave the holes open for cooling and just blow the dust out on a regular basis? If left uncovered dirt will probably cause more bearing wear, but would this be partially offset by the additional cooling? Anyone try foam filters to cover the holes? Most brushed motors have open endbells and some even have holes/slots cut in the can for cooling.

RC_KAOS, yes I have the RC-Monster dust cap. I was just wondering why Neu would put so many cooling holes in the motor can.

the difference in temp between having the holes covered and uncovered would be minimal. One of the great design features of brushless motors is that the windings are mechanically connected to the aluminum can, which disipates heat quite effectively. If you are running in dust protect your investment, cover those holes.

I made my own foam cover. I cut a thick chunk of foam and hollowed part out, cut slots for the motor wires and zap strap it to the motor can. I used a little oil on the foam too to grab the dirt. I just cleaned the motor last night and seems to work good as there was little crud in the motor.

Hey guys thanks for the replies. I will use the cover to keep the dust/dirt out of the motor.

And if you want to protect it even more, get the aluminum front plate. Not only does it keep the dust out, but prevents screws from hitting the coils if screwed in too far. Plus, it helps if you happen to strip out the threads or break a screw.

BrianG, I saw that front plate and I thought it would be perfect for my mechanical brake setup. The plate would act as a spacer to move the motor back to clear the brake rotors.

I use the rc-monster rear cover. I just put some duct tape or electrical tape over the front holes. The rc-monster aluminum plate doesn't fit the new Neu motors now. I believe the new batch of motors only has a .75 shaft. I originally had a 1515 1y and the aluminum plate worked perfectly. I believe that shaft was 1 inch. However, I switched to the 1512 and the shaft is shorter and it won't work with the aluminum plate because it won't leave enough room for the pinion to grab.

So i see you can get Neu motors with fans mounted to them:

These look awesome and if Neu is installing these, dust can't be a HUGE problem(???)...

The Bigmaxximums also have fans on them, has anyone with a BM ever had troubles with dust getting in the motor?

hi

the question is if those fans on the NEU blow directly into the motor or just blow over the can. the plettenberg fans only create a blow over the finned can. the can itself is closed.

the NEU are still aircraft motors. i don't get it that they have not yet designed new motors with closed cans as obviously they are efficient enough to run cool without all those holes. its the same sad thing with those new kontronik kira motors or the new lenher versions with fans. they are just too open for real offroad applications and blow directly into the motor.




the fins on the pletti are gone but you can imagine where they were....before the little stone got in there. but imagine what would have happened if the fan blew that stone into the motor can itself......

The problem I find with vented motors is small metalic bits of rocks end up stuck to the magnets. This probably isn't as big a problem in a brushless motor as the magnets spin and all the crud will get thrown off. Still can cause problems though. The vented and fan motors are designed to be used in non dusty environments. RC cars is not one of them.

That is a sweet design on the big maximums. I didn't know about that.
